In honor of the debate, this instant classic.
17.10.2025 01:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The farmers are recruited by being paid what it would take them a decade to earn. Theyβre moved around, often blindfolded, by men in masks. They launch from remote spots. They all cooperate with the DOJ but they basically know nothing by design. Read βThe Floating Guantanamos,β NYT 2017. /2
22.09.2025 12:17 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There is a long running program called PanEx where they interdict these boats and bring them to the US for prosecution. I represented dozens of these cases as a federal public defender. To make a complex story short, the boats are operated by destitute rural farmers. /1
22.09.2025 12:09 β π 10 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0My heart goes out to all the people in Colorado reeling from yet more senseless gun violence perpetrated against our kids. It is a disgusting lie that this is a necessary (or worse, worthwhile) trade off for the βfreedomβ of a society saturated with firearms. The guns are the problem.
11.09.2025 00:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The ninth footnote in the Harvard v. US order is incredible. Judge Burroughs really captures a lot of the sentiment at the district court level right now.
10.09.2025 19:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thatβs fair. I donβt have data to support my thought that the same people who would vote in these complete assholes are less well equipped than I am to navigate the situation theyβre putting us in. Itβs just a theory.
02.09.2025 12:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ok! Then we are making different but related points: youβre highlighting that it will harm everyone, and Iβm highlighting that it will disproportionately harm the people that voted in the regime putting us in this position.
02.09.2025 12:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I can make it even shorter: the morons that voted in these anti-science conservatives are the most vulnerable to the problems that come with eliminating the FDA. Leopards/faces.
02.09.2025 12:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I follow, but you asked if *I* am advocating for that. Absolutely not. My point is that getting rid of an org that does independent reviews of testing promulgated by drug companies will shift the onus to individuals and small groups to understand the results of the testing and disfavors the dumb.
02.09.2025 12:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Nope, not at all, not advocating for getting rid of the FDA even remotely. Iβm addressing my comment that, in this dystopian climate, individuals taking charge of their own care in the absence of the FDA would disproportionately harm the anti-science crowd. Thatβs what my original comment was about.
02.09.2025 12:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We are talking about untested drugs going to market, no? Someone taking something like ivermectin isnβt a threat to me directly, thatβs my point. Those folks overlap heavily with the folks who wonβt vaccinate so there may be a net positive if they exercise their βfreedomβ to try experimental meds.
02.09.2025 12:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0On the other hand, if my doctor said βthere is this new med and while we donβt have an FDA now, everyone in our medical group reviewed the extensive testing promulgated by the drug company and we feel like the risks are low and potential rewards are highβ then that is less of a crapshoot.
02.09.2025 12:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1To be clear, Iβm not advocating for this. But people choosing to try novel, untested treatments on themselves isnβt as serious a threat to those of us who are smart and science-oriented as something like vaccine abstinence is. Itβs a bit Darwinian to choose the mystery meds because you read a blog.
02.09.2025 12:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sure, but we have existing tested treatments across the medical spectrum that we currently use, so we still have access to those. Drug companies do their own testing and submit it to the FDA, so doctors would need to analyze that data directly and advise patients on new treatment developments.
02.09.2025 12:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Maybe, except that it seems like those of us that understand the basics of biology wonβt experiment on ourselves with untested treatments, and would instead rely on trustworthy professionals like our established doctors to make treatment decisions.
02.09.2025 11:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There are worse ways to speed up the demise of the anti-science crowd.
02.09.2025 00:40 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβm go glad that NYT is normalizing this because who among us wouldnβt trade political favors for crab cakes?
22.08.2025 13:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I had a boss that was a Trump carbon copy in a job that I loved deeply, but eventually left because of how exhausting and difficult it was. That took up 2021-2023. To go from that experience right into this administration is something I wouldnβt wish on my worst enemy.
19.08.2025 20:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, and also police of all kinds have behaved this way for a long time. Warrant to search for marijuana? They smash apart the pantry, bust open the dresser, and slit every mattress. Itβs a disgusting, longstanding part of police culture and itβs deeply contrary to the spirit of the 4th Amendment.
11.08.2025 01:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That is how people earn their way to spend time outside, or have a job (a privilege), or take classes. And this is woman skipped the line over all the other women who have been working toward better living conditions but didnβt commit crimes that made national news or implicated the President. /3
09.08.2025 14:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What should bother people about this is that people in prison (men and women) have to work diligently over a long period of time to move away from the most oppressive and restrictive housing sections to different areas or other prisons. /2
09.08.2025 14:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Prison is awful. Itβs loud, smelly, the lights are always on, and you never get to use the bathroom privately, it can be dangerous and takes an enormous psychological toll on people. It isnβt a spa or a country club. The egregious thing here is something else entirely. /1

Yeah, as a Floridian I find it very difficult to imagine that there is somehow *more* gerrymandering left in the well.
07.08.2025 23:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I wish it wasnβt considered controversial to say that people should not be starved to death. I wish it wasnβt controversial to say that is unacceptable for all of humanity.
28.07.2025 23:01 β π 5006 π 1042 π¬ 41 π 18I think South Florida is headed for a reckoning. It doesnβt seem sustainable between the outrageous wealth disparity, local corruption, and immigration tensions (the Cubans felt immune until they werenβt). The last thing they need is a Cuomo.
20.07.2025 15:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Youβre right, but it feels like it ramped up in the Desantis era. We had Bill Nelson until 2020, which made a huge difference in things like judicial appointments. The gerrymandering makes us look even more red than we are (look what they did to get Anna Paulina Luna a job) but still, itβs bad here.
20.07.2025 15:25 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I second this, our state is overrun by people who came here because they were attracted to Desantis politics and now we are drowning in idiots π
