Donner idolizes father figures, limiting Superman's ability to grow and be his own character. There is no learning, it's Superman returning to the character he was before he stopped the missiles.

Lester shows the impact that a choice or something done with the heart, and not rationally, can have.

Lester's Superman 2 is better because Donner's version undoes the beautiful message about independence from the first film and makes the authoritarian Jor-El right.

Does Superman struggle with feeling unfulfilled in his life? That for everything he does, will it ever fill the emptiness in his divided self?
Will he ever be WHOLE?
Or just the sum of his experiences.
