Zephyr Badge get! This is also a Unique Ball run, so I won't pick up my Geodude until I pick up a Great Ball (there's a couple hidden on the way to Azalea Town)

A crop of a panel from the 4 Unending Journeys chapter "Who is Justice Virtuoso?". Sesame is speaking to Kaiien, who is off panel. Sesame's face is a mixture of shock and concern.

SESAME: "Justice, what did he look like?"
KAIIEN: "His... appearance?"

In this panel, Sesame has purple eyes.

To me the Hyrule of TotK actually DOESN'T feel the (exact) same as BotW. And it's not just because it was quite a while between me playing each, but also how you're given a different toolset to interact with the world. IMO it's a much better companion if using Zonai parts and other unique systems.

(ps I also believe that TotK would have benefited from having a more concrete connection to BotW. I have two hands.)

A piece of pixel art of a set of playing cards, aiming to emulate the limitations of original Game Boy hardware. The image's color palette is the classic Game Boy olive green. The goal was to use background tiles instead of sprites to create a standard French-suited deck with Jokers, and the top half of the image has all of the tiles organized into a tileset. The bottom half of the image shows example cards composed of these tiles: the Ace of Spades, the Queen of Hearts, the 10 of Clubs, the 7 of Diamonds, a Joker, and the reverse side of a card. The 10 of Clubs and 7 of Diamonds show that numbered cards (besides Aces) use two pips regardless of rank as a space-saving measure.

Partway through this exercise I learned that only Game Boy Color supports tile mirroring but by that point I had really grown attached to the symmetrical design scheme and I still managed to end up with exactly 128 tiles (including the empty tile) #pixelart #gameboy

Anyway that's the ramblings of a millenial that likes retro jank (and DK64 and FF3). It's definitely not a universal opinion to have!!

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In my opinion Tag Barrels and Bananaport pads DO seem to be thoughtfully placed as well. I feel like people tend to over-exaggerate how long it takes to change Kongs. It's part of learning the map!

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Though the other thing apparent with DK64/FF3 absolutely IS their rigidity. There are a few situations where areas are unlocked by certain Kongs that have items for OTHER Kongs inside of it. Depending on the version of FF3 you only have two jobs that can use White Magic for the LONGEST time.

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And also why am I personally fine with it? I don't feel like the game is wasting my time when an "oh I need a different Key Item" situation happens. I guess because I grew up with DK64 I can be more patient in that regard. Keeping notes shouldn't be viewed as a failure!

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I feel the kneejerk reaction here is the embarrassment from realizing you made a bad decision from a place of ignorance. And making sure your players are informed IS good game design! But for what it's worth I think both FF3 and DK64 do an okay job at that besides the obvious.

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

One argument against Player Options as Key Items that I can think of is that it limits player expression, but is that really the case? In both DK64 and FF3 there's an expectation to use ALL the characters/jobs. I'm not so sure changing to Monk is the same as choosing Alena for your DQ4 endgame party

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The Tag Anywhere mod is being brought up more and more frequently when people ask about DK64. But is it accessibility, QoL, or a cheat code? Or a mix of all three? It's not a BAD thing (and honestly it's done wonders for DK64's health) but I still get the ick from it for some reason...

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There's a kind of "backtracking" in FF3 as well, since depending on the version you'll need to spend a few battles grinding the CP or paying the Job Adjustment tax. Or you could be the Pixel Remaster where job switching is free! But there's still equipment concerns and regaining MP to handle.

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Player Options as Key Items is an interesting design space to explore because how do you account for players choosing the "wrong" option? It's not very fun to answer "too bad, you'll need multiple playthroughs to 100% this game". And then there's the "backtracking" complaint for DK64...

26.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Like, these both are commonly presented examples of bad game design in the VG essay discourse sphere but these are specifically when you use player options like key items. Only a White Mage can cast Mini to get you into the Nepto Temple. Only Chunky Kong can shoot pineapple switches.

I saw another "they require you to be specific jobs to progress in FF3, gross" take and I had a brain blast

It's literally the same as people who complain about the Tag Barrel in DK64
