County approves purchase of Cherry Street lot for new homeless shelter ITHACA, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Legislature on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a site to construct a new year-round homeless shelter. The roughly one-acre lot is located in an industrial neighborhood on Cherry Street on Ithaca’s West End.  County officials said they hope to begin the design process on the 100-bed shelter by the end of 2025.
