As president elect for @acutemedicine.bsky.social I am really keen to hear from as many acute physicians as possible to really hear opinions and experiences. Really enjoyed visiting SASH and Frimley today to see their great work in strengthening their AMUπŸ‘πŸ‘

What percentage of confused older people actually have a UTI? In the last few weeks I’ve seen appendicitis, triple A rupture, subdural and biliary sepsis all labelled as UTI. I’m so anti the diagnosis of UTI now I fear I may actually miss it!

The most common fear that medical students talk about is the risk of making a mistake or being sued. A great team at studentBMJ have put together a podcast on this. Honoured to be invited!

Med students frightened of being a dr as they hear so much ne gd as to both and resident drs choosing against medicine as they hear so much bad stuff about being a med spr. Well I LOVE my job. Let’s talk about the positives! @takeaim.bsky.social Help me out!

I bore people senselessly with this but it’s important!!
- less can be more
- time is a great diagnostician tool
- just because we can doesn’t mean we should!

When we arrived in the UK I was aged 5. I had no English. The first few days of primary school were terrifying.

But I was lucky enough to find one kid who would play with me. Only one.

We've remained friends ever since.

He was my best man too.

That's the power of kindness

I like this barometer of the state of the NHS. A picture with red scrubs ma means big badness.

Because of the patient interaction and the detective nature of the work and the ability to really practice patient centred medicine.
Can’t ask colleagues to lie if the do hate their job. But perhaps not being so dismissive in a 5th year student lecture 4 months before finals might be better?

Heard from a few final medical students in various medical schools that they have been hearing nothing but dismissive things from consultants β€œget our whilst you can” etc. I love my job. Acute medicine is such a satisfying career. Yes there are difficult frustrations. But the job is brilliant.

At the heart of this appalling new normal is a system where demand continues to exceed capacity. No hospital can β€˜play ball’ whilst functioning at 100% capacity.
We are hurtling into months of chaos as this winter will be a new terrifying nadir.
