One big difference was the high tide cycles.

During the Blizzard of '78, there was massive coastal flooding thanks to astronomical high tides from New Jersey up to Massachusetts.

This storm - the tides are not as high, limiting the coastal flooding.

AS OF 1 PM, THE SNOWFALL TOTAL AT RHODE ISLAND T.F. GREENE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS 32.8 INCHES. THIS BROKE THE RECORD FOR THE GREATEST SINGLE SNOWSTORM ON RECORD, WHICH WAS 28.6 INCHES SET DURING THE BLIZZARD OF `78, ON FEBRUARY 6-7, 1978.

I believe the technical term is “puking snow” in Providence and much of SE MA right now. Easily 2-4”/hour rates in that bad. Also, winds are howling with gusts near 55-60 mph!

There is a 30-day delay after a presidential proclamation before tariffs are triggered. Sec. 201 tariffs Allows for tariffs to address harm to U.S. domestic industries. May only last for up to 8 years (initial 4 years plus optional 4-year renewal), and are limited to a 50% ad valorem rate. After 1 year, tariffs must phase down "at regular intervals." Requires investigation from ITC. Reclassify as "licensing fees" President Trump suggested that if SCOTUS strikes down lEEPA tariffs, he may reframe them as licensing fees. Flight on Sunday from OKC to HOU for the AMS meeting already cancelled by Southwest. Rebooked for Monday afternoon - hopefully I can get out then. 🫤

UPDATE: The Travel Alert is out and Southwest is now allowing passengers to change their flights free of charge.

HOWEVER, since I booked my flight through @sapcommunity.bsky.social Concur, I have to change it through Concur. When I do that, Concur wants to charge $160 for the change. 🙃

Hey, Southwest Airlines, when are you going to issue a Travel Alert for the winter storm and allow your passengers to change their flights?

Snowfall accumulation forecast map for Oklahoma for Friday to Saturday. It shows a potential 8-12” for Oklahoma City into east central Oklahoma.

I’m not sure if I am ever going to be able to get to Houston for the AMS meeting, if these accumulations actually happen.
