Small brass butterfly.

Small brass butterfly.

The underside of the butterfly, which has little pockets to store sewing needle packets. The underside of the wings are decorated with two plates. One carries an inscription of the drapers company: "Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co. - London." The other has a gilded head of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, art, trade, and war.

The butterfly can be folded up, like how a butterfly flaps its wings.

Beautiful 1860s Victorian butterfly, which was used to store small packets of sewing needles on the underside of the wings. This was a collaboration between a London-based drapers company and a sewing needle manufacturer. On exhibit at Tatter Blue, a Brooklyn textile museum.

Will spend the rest of my life considering how we were rushed into "going paperless" for the good of the environment only for the next generation of digital tools to become far worse for the environment.

ChatGPT identified something I wrote last year as being by John Milton: gave work, line numbers and several subsequent (but entirely hallucinated) lines.
Today, putting those hallucinated lines into Google’s AI, it confidently identifies them as by John Milton.

One of the most surprising teaching experiences I've had recently was students dismissing a story because "they didn't see themselves in it", or because "it didn't speak to them". The stakes of persuading them that imagining what it's like being somebody else mattered felt really, really high.

Tip for PhD applicants reaching out to prospective advisors: Don’t use an LLM to write these emails. It’s not a great first impression to express your admiration for a recent paper the faculty member published if that paper does not exist.
