ARTISTS! if you have an old drawing tablet that doesn't have any drivers available anymore or is just unsupported now, i HIGHLY recommend checking out opentabletdriver.net

my old wacom bamboo is now unsupported and you can't even get old drivers anymore, works perfectly (even in windows 11).

it's like... worrying about algebra tests and first crushes and when to tape anime episodes... juxtaposed with worrying about being a government target if you / your parents didn't seem patriotic enough or realizing you'll have to live w/ the socioeconomic fallout of a bunch of shit

while I didn't live through 90s Northern Ireland civil conflict, I was a teen POC in the post-9/11 paranoia in the US and I think a lot of my peers and I felt a very similar 'caught up in our own lives but glancing uneasily at the elephant in the room' feeling growing up

also the show captured that perfect balance of lightheartedness + being aware of how fucked up the world can get for a teen growing up amidst political struggles

that resonated w/ me (despite the different decade of things)

binged Derry Girls while recovering from surgery and I'm devastated it isn't longer of a show

gremlin frat bro shenanigans but with girls? and also poignant coming of age themes? man, it was written so well

Apple Music doesn't have a lot of my nostalgic favorite jpop songs (or it has an alternate version but not the one I want) BUT it does have my favorite KOKIA album "The VOICE" which Spotify doesn't, so a win there

Iโ€™ve wanted to draw a millefleurs tapestry for so long and finally had the chance to do it and turn it into a physical woven tapestry! On preorder until Aug 27, est. to ship in Oct. Can be used as a tapestry or blanket - fully machine-washable and only gets softer with use ๐Ÿฆ‰

frankly I still enjoyed my experience w/ Spotify more bc I liked the UX more and some JP stuff on US Spotify isn't on Apple Music, but this is my small 'take the inconvenience for the morals' action

not that Apple isn't an evil corp in its own way but for now they're not funding AI military drones

made the switch from Spotify to Apple Music bc indirectly supporting AI military drones is something that I really can't stand for

AI on its own and military drones on their own are... ehhh, but together? yikes

Without getting into the AI angle, I think dead people should be allowed to remain dead. You don't need to commodify everything. You don't get to claim something that belonged to a real person simply because he's not around to assert his likeness rights. We have film. We have memories. It's enough.

A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.

KOSA is back. This is the internet censorship bill!

And it's not just coming for SWers, it'll be coming for all LGBTQ content, because the people in charge view LGBTQ people as inherently pornagraphic!

We must push back even harder than we did last time we killed this bill ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I think because the books have such a devoted following from (current) adults who grew up w/ them, I was under the impression it was YA not children's lit for ages

not that YA is difficult to read but it definitely takes a bit longer

(I like Animorphs but man I think this is the right amount of triumph vs. tragedy

Animorphs was a bit too emotionally wrenching at times haha)

28.07.2025 20:08 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

also the fact that Shit Happens and Things Have Lasting Consequences was good

wasn't tonally as dark as say, Animorphs, but I like that it wasn't just a "well we went through stuff but here's a magical reset and everything's okay again like it never happened"

28.07.2025 20:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I appreciate that they weren't condescendingly didactic, as some books can be

I think writing children's lit is hard because you really have to respect kids' intelligence and not spell out moral conclusions for them, but also not overcomplicate it. PJO hit a really good balance IMO

28.07.2025 20:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think I put it off for ages bc I was like... man there's so many books... then I realized wait the target audience is 9-12 year olds (at least for the original 5), so I can go through it twice as fast as I would have at that age haha

28.07.2025 20:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I really like Riordan's writing style

a lot of modern childrens' / YA in first person isn't quite that appealing for me to slog through but PJO had good flow and the humor was great (vaguely felt like a very American, not as sardonic version of Eoin Colfer)

finally got around to reading the Percy Jackson books for the first time, and tore through the original pentalogy in ~2-3 days

honestly wish I had gotten into this w/ the same intensity as I liked HP back in my childhood but they were still immensely enjoyable as an adult

I interviewed Amanda Dyer, the original model for Tsukihime's Arcueid Brunestud!

She details her life in 90's Japan and provides never-before-seen images from the photoshoot that Takashi Takeuchi was inspired by!

There are things I like about this essay and things I don't like.

I don't like the undercurrent of stereotyping nonbinary people as middle class liberal dilettantes undermining medical transitioners' right to change sex.

Cassowary Sound & Calls - The deep growls & rumbles of a Southern Cassowary
YouTube video by Wild Ambience Cassowary Sound & Calls - The deep growls & rumbles of a Southern Cassowary

I had never heard the call of cassowaries before, so I never knew that their voice was so low. I thought every cassowary I met at a zoo was very taciturn and silent. But maybe their voice was just too low for my ears to hear.

seems like a lot of blogs find Reaper's learning curve steeper than Pro Tools haha

I think Reaper is one of those "it can be pretty easy or it can be very detailed and hard depending on how you make your experience" IMO

20.07.2025 22:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

for the time being I'm likely sticking with Reaper since I haven't really felt that Pro Tools has any massive advantages for my current purposes, and I like Reaper's workflow and overall feel better

20.07.2025 22:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

learned some basics of Pro Tools in ~3 days and I can see why this DAW is The Industry Standard but I definitely think it has a very steep learning curve and if I hadn't been at least decently fluent in Reaper prior, I would have been totally lost
