"Censorship begets censorship ... We've reached the dystopian stage of the internet."

This piece is a vital accounting of how we got where we are and where it's going if more people don't push back against what @ericgoldman.bsky.social calls age-verification's "segregate-and-suppress" laws.

Same in criminal law. The Miranda of "Miranda rights" fame started doing burglaries in grade school, was convicted for raping a teenager (twice; the first conviction was thrown out by SCOTUS in Miranda v Arizona, and he was convicted again on remand), and got murdered in a bar fight

I tried to find out if the fossil I bought online was real. Then I realized I was asking the wrong question | CNN It’s obvious a 95 million-year-old fossil would have a rich past β€” but what a CNN writer discovered about a dinosaur tooth he bought for about $100 was more than he anticipated.

I was interviewed for this article. It's pleasing that a Moroccan fossil dealer confirms what I said the law was and clarifies that it isn't 'a grey area'. It's got nothing to do with UNESCO, btw John. www.cnn.com/2025/08/15/s...

No it definitely has multiple definitions because historians and PoliScis can’t agree on the key features. The definition I heard that I’m most partial too is that Fascism is a political strategy that attacks the legitimacy of opponents to participate in society/politics.

Some numbers I just dropped in one of the threads about "Itch should have already set up a high risk payment processor and been using it": these numbers are from 2010, but to the best of my knowledge have not substantially changed.

Our whole timeline has been nothing but journalists, critics and culture writers announcing their own layoffs and I'm literally sickened by the thought of what will happen to society when all of their work will be taken over by Clippy

The most pernicious thing about capitalism is that when shit goes sideways you've got all of us in the mud flinging shit at parties who are the face of but *not responsible for* abusive policies while the actual authors of said policy are insulated and squeaky clean.

I had this exact feeling with Wicked but that film also helped me recalibrate my expectations and understand how the new timeline works because my mom, my cousin, and I each saw it for the first time a different way (streaming, bought early digital, and in theaters respectively).

Why Labour's Online Safety Act has become a political nightmare The Online Safety Act's broad and vaguely defined scope has led to widespread and seemingly indiscriminate censorship.

How bad is the Online Safety Act roll out going?

UK officials have started spreading rumors that it's the internet's fault β€” accusing sites like Reddit and Twitter of purposely overcensoring to undermine the unpopular censorship law.

That's Trump-firing-economist-for-reporting-bad-numbers bad.

Since y'all are here: It's been almost 3 years since I packed up my life in Norway and came home to practice midwifery. β€ͺMy last 2 classes EVER (GYN + the last lab) start Monday. I'm down to the last 23 births needed for board exams eligibility. It's been a slog, but every bit helps.

The Mississippi River wants to change course. The struggle to stop it faces new threats. Of all the levees, gates and walls keeping the Mississippi River in place across the length of America’s spine, Old River Control in Louisiana may be the most consequential. But the structure’s opera...

This is a good explainer on the Old River Control structure, also known as the thing responsible for 50% of my nightmares.

I think "why are people mad at Dems" is pretty straightforward at this point

they will crawl over broken glass to vote these people out and would like Dems to match that energy

If course the POW was lying his ass off lol but if they didn’t think he knew anything they wouldn’t have tortured him and at that point Hirohito frankly seemed to trust what the enemy had to say more than his own military leaders because they lied to him that many times.

I do think if the US seriously attempted negotiations directly with Hirohito we may have gotten a similar deal, although the rewrite of their constitution and the occupation probably would’ve gone down differently. But negotiations with Hirohito are very different from the attempts with the USSR.

That’s another good reason to discount them but I don’t think we can say definitely they would’ve gone no where. Their demands weren’t serious but we also never took them seriously or tried to make them act reasonably. Of course it’s all speculative now but based on the sources I’ve looked at…
