A black-and-white photograph shows a smiling railway worker standing in the open doorway of a train car. He wears a uniform jacket with large buttons and a matching cap, and one hand holds the vertical door handle. The side of the train car beside him displays a large circular logo with a maple leaf and the words βCanadian National Railways.β The scene appears to be taken at a station or rail yard, with the trainβs metal exterior and door frame visible.
For decades, Sleeping Car Porters worked long hours, for little pay and nearly no job security.
This led to the formation of the Order of the Sleeping Car Porters in Winnipeg, the first Black labour union in North America.
This is the story.

Of course so many don't know the names of Black folks killed by ICE.
It's been proven time & time again that police & state violence against Black ppl is the status quo & folks move on quick.
Antiblackness remains the most prevalent currency of white supremacy, everybody trades in it.

The Case of the Disappearing School
Yard Hoops
Basketball can be a really cheap activity. You need a ball, but most schoolyards can provide the backboard and rims. Or can they?
In 2019, journalist Luke Galati noticed his local schoolyard, Earl Grey Sr, had a backboard with no rim.
Galati did some digging and it turns out schools across the city had been removing them to discourage the presence of people on public property during evenings and weekends. In response, Galati posted an online petition that called for the permanent reinstallation of the rims so people could play outside of school hours. While some of the hoops returned, Galati and others are still waiting for a wider solution to keep the kids playing.

I'm surprised we don't yet have announced boycotts of the World Cup, but unless the World Cup goes off totally implausibly and improbably smoothly for international athletes and fans alike, it's hard for me to imagine that the '28 Olympics in LA won't get hit hard with boycotts.
