Thanks! The effect is the result of a particular prism filter screwed onto the lens. (I think it goes by a few different names - a vortex filter, whirlpool, or halo filter. Found this one on eBay - but I think it can be found elsewhere, too.)

Example: I was at the SF MoMA recently, and encountered Zanele Muholi’s “Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness, Volume II” and Daido Moriyama’s “Record 2”.

Two totally different artists; both with striking B&W work.

Oddly, one of my primary pleasures when going to an art museum lies in perusing the museum shop, and (hopefully) finding a good photo book – especially if it features the work of an artist with whom I’m not familiar. (Which is sometimes a little embarrassing, if the artist is pretty well known.)
