Hi, we’re Monarch. Monarch Queer Literary Awards is a new anthology recognizing the best new queer writing and art published by literary magazines and independent presses. We aim to uplift the groundbreaking and often under-celebrated poems, short stories, essays, and artwork that are published in magazines, chapbooks, zines, and other collections.

More about Monarch. We want to celebrate excellence in all regards: great writing and great community stewardship. While submissions from both emerging and established publications will (of course) be given equal consideration, we really hope to see some of our longstanding community members come out and join us in the revelry of it all!

Submit to Monarch. We will accept submissions from September 1 through November 30, 2025. Submissions must come from the editor or editors of the publication. Journals and independent presses are eligible. The work must have been initially published between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025, either online or in print.

My style in college was "aggressively comfortable," so I was actually concerned less with looking like an English major and more with showing that I was a college student. Page 2 says, 2. Take a book everywhere. And it has to be something impressive, or at least edgy. Two illustrations of If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. Also, the book had to be purchased from Barnes & Noble or Borders. English majors invest in their craft. Footnote: I started college in 2008, three years before Borders went under in the U.S.

To be absolutely clear, this is not the case. At no point was the use of cannons or any type of cannon sound effect discussed, proposed, or approved by anyone associated with our organization. Please help us dispel this misinformation by confirming, if asked, that no cannon of firearm effects, real or artificial, will be used in the performance. We remain committed to a safe, appropriate, and musically rich experience for both performers and our school audiences.

another zine I'm working on is about being a 25-year-old undergrad (I did my first degree "on time" before going back) and how ANCIENT I felt compared to my classmates, many of whom were—oh god!—21 or so

I'm now weeks from 35 and wishing I'd calmed down even a little bit, because 25 is so baby
