Growing up in Cambridge, how you pronounced Harvard Yard was the quick determiner if you were a local or not. I bemoaned my parents insisting on that I pronounce my r's, but as Educators themselves, while not snobs, they knew colloquial accents sometimes limited perceptions of you.
