Math just made sense to me and I didn’t have to work at it until differential equations, which was a harsh wake up at the time. I had a great prof, but that’s when I realized I could do it but I no longer “got it”.

I loved having my kids show me the weird trick of the week. If they asked for help and I don’t know that particular method we’d look up videos together. My kids mostly had teachers that would teach all methods and let the kids do whatever worked for them for quizzes, etc.

Also the freak out had just as much to do with barely-disguised racism as it did with the purity of proper math instruction.

It’s wild, my kids were early “common core” age and all kinds of parents lost their minds. I could never understand the freak out. Why not give kids 5 ways to do a problem instead of forcing them to do it 1 way? Who cares if kids use “tricks” instead of computational long division?

During break this year the slightly fancy mall near us had a “curfew” at 3pm. Anyone under 18 had to have a parent or guardian *with* them (not just also in the mall)
The call from security to tell me I had to lead 15 & their friend around the mall was, um, something.
