I think given that Codsworth is one of the first NPCs you meet, it was likely meant as a party trick opening to the game. Like the comment above says, people would be used to games not saying their player name, so unless you went in already knowing about Codsworth, I don't think you'd be alienated

I did enjoy the small detail in Fallout 4 where Codsworth has voice lines for several hundred names so he can greet the player as their name when you talk to him. It only works in English and obviously only catches common names, but it worked for me (Player named Aaron)
