Today, we do more than honour Indigenous resilience. We demand an end to the systematic persecution of Adivasis, and accountability from the Indian government and security forces.

🛑 What’s more, resistance is met with arbitrary arrest, detention, torture and enforced disappearances. India’s Indigenous peoples are being silenced, dispossessed, and erased. AT TLS we have documented this systematic persecution in our reports: bit.ly/3UiiZHO; bit.ly/3UliTPC ; bit.ly/4mzHex2.

Bastar District, in the state of Chhattisgarh, is now one of the most militarised zones on Earth—villages have become open-air prisons. Women and children are subject to violence. Entire communities live under siege.

To clear the way for extraction, the Indian government has escalated militarised violence. Under the cover of a Maoist counterinsurgency, Adivasis are being arbitrarily arrested & detained, tortured, subjected to sexual violence, forcibly disappeared & executed through extrajudicial killings.

Instead, the Indian government is complicit in corporate land grabs which displace entire communities to make way for extractive industries and mining.

The Indian government has not ratified ILO Convention 169- the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention-and despite constitutional guarantees for Adivasis, does not recognise these communities as indigenous peoples. 2/8

India undoubtedly needs to combat the disinformation epidemic. But criminalised censorship isn't the answer.

❗We need platform accountability, public digital literacy, and independent fact-checking, not jail time for a misquoted tweet.

Both the #EU and #India are facing a disinformation crisis. However, the EU’s #DSA doesn’t criminalise speech. It builds structural safeguards like risk assessments, transparency, and independent oversight, without making governments the arbiter of truth.

⚖️ India's own courts have warned against such vague and sweeping laws.

In Shreya Singhal v. Union of India, the Supreme Court held that vague restrictions chill speech and violate constitutional freedoms.

The bill also prohibits content that "disrespects Sanatan symbols."
❓ But what counts as a Sanatan symbol? Om? The militant Hanuman? A saffron flag?
This vagueness could shield majoritarian politics from any criticism.

Enforcement would lie with a politically constituted authority chaired by the Minister for Information.

•Detail how they moderate political figures’ speech & how they are mitigating against the systemic risks which stem from this speech
•Issue updated guidance that political figures and influencers, regardless of their position, are not exempt from content moderation rules.

✊🏽We call on the @ec.europa.eu Commission to recognise that political figures and social media influencers should not remain exempt from content moderation rules.

🚨Currently, political figures & social media influencers are exempt from content moderation rules under vague “public interest” clauses. This dangerous loophole is fuelling hate speech disinformation & violence, undermining elections & eroding global trust in the EU’s digital governance environment.
