To be clear: we WANT platforms to redistribute revenue to #creators.

Otherwise, platforms would accrue ALL of the billions they earn in ad revenue each year.

But we need to ensure that these programs don’t finance — or incentivize — illegal and harmful activity.

WHAT TO FIX’s Submission to the European Board on Digital Services’ Annual Report on Systemic Risks We’re excited to share our submission to the European Board for Digital Services’ request for input, designed to inform its first annual report on systemic risks and recommended mitigation measures.

The design, functioning and use of platforms' #monetization services has an impact across all systemic risks.

Yet, none of the platforms addressed monetization-related risks in their #DSA risk assessments. 🤔

Maybe the next ones?

The #EU’s famous Digital Services Act ( #DSA) has been celebrated for bringing regulatory oversight to online platforms and intermediaries.

But it doesn’t explicitly address platforms’ #monetization systems.

That’s a big gap.

Facebook is unlikely to be the only platform to have engaged in revenue redistribution partnerships with sanctioned entities or actors otherwise engaged in illegal activity.

Meta just happens to be the only company to disclose its active partner-publishers.

That needs to change. #Transparency

At @whattofix.tech our expertise is in #TechPolicy and #TechAccountability.

So what we REALLY want to draw your attention to is what all this reveals about the inadequacy of:

♦️ social media platforms’ monetization systems and monetization governance

♦️ the current state of oversight
