Encouraging article but would challenge your assessment of a current duopoly between AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile now has 32% of the cell phone market, higher than AT&T’s share. This competition has enormous advantages, especially for travelers overseas, where T-Mobile offers superior alternative.

Destruction in Paradise: Kyrgyzstan’s Ala-Archa National Park Under Siege The construction of A-frame houses, cafes, roads, and funiculars in Ala-Archa National Park appears to violate multiple Kyrgyz laws protecting natural areas.

Destruction in Paradise: Kyrgyzstan’s Ala-Archa National Park Under Siege thediplomat.com/2025/06/dest...

One of many legacies of the Soviet era: a premier natural park on the outskirts of the Kyrgyzstani capital controlled by the presidency's dept. of administrative affairs (upravdelami).

Extraordinary that it’s been less than six months since this cover appeared on The Economist. The price of using a wrecking ball as your policy tool of choice.

73 works of mine apparently captured, including 4 of 5 books (the exception was a co-edit). Some have links to the works, though they are paywalled or links are broken.

When I posted this quote on Facebook, I was suspended for three days for promoting hate speech against totalitarians. In Zuckerberg's view, that's something horrible.

Given the time needed for interpreting, especially for Trump's non-linear delivery (putting it nicely), this seems like a fairly short discussion that is likely to have left most major issues unresolved.

It's critical to remember who stations like Azattyk reach through their online stories and publications, not just among elites in Kyrgyzstan but Western scholars and journalists. And estimates of listeners to the Farsi service of RL are quite high. It had clearly not outlived its usefulness.

Here's a Russian military expert practically gloating about how the denial of US intel to Ukraine will make it easier for Russia to achieve a breakthrough in a potential spring/summer offensive.

Trump policy is giving Russia no reason to stop the war.

Trump painted himself into a corner in the campaign saying he'd solve the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. Now he has found a way to lift this burden by blowing up at Zelensky and claiming Ukraine isn't ready for peace. A convenient escape, which Vance at least facilitated and possibly designed.

My op-ed below outlines the dangers of dismantling #SoftPower power organizations like USAID and RFE/RL. This form of unilateral disarmament shows that Trump 2.0 is destructive, not disruptive. @RFERL #DOGE #Musk

You’ve written the book on the silovoki and I keep wondering how far Putin can allow some in security services to go in carping at the military leadership through milbloggers and YouTubers. Some criticism and interagency tension is useful for Putin but at what point does it become destabilizing?

Lambasts Russian military leadership for its failures in Syria, Kursk, and elsewhere; says he is being fed the information on this from a source in the security services. Takeaway: he wants "rotation" of personnel, meaning a housecleaning. No direct criticism of Putin, of course, but seems implied.

For Russian speakers: remarkable to see videos that criticize the country's military leadership in the harshest terms. They reveal the longstanding tensions between the security services and the armed forces. Without information and protection from former, no such videos. youtu.be/vjYNeLXmcAA?...

How to explain the paradoxical tendency of Romanian voters abroad, most of whom would be working in EU countries, to give so many votes to an anti-EU candidate? Is it a strange expression of dissatisfaction with their lives abroad or a desire to disrupt an unpopular elite at home?

It was a reflection of my own ignorance about Russia's richness and diversity that I was surprised to meet a person of such depth, humanity, and professionalism in Udmurtia. My heart aches for his wife and family. This affront to justice is one more reason among thousands to fight against tyranny.

Dmitrii Talantov was one of the most decent and honorable advocates I met during decades of research on the Russian Bar. We met in his city of Izhevsk in 2003 and he graciously allowed me to observe an oral Bar exam. Among Russia's finest, his arrest and imprisonment come as devastating news.

Sympathetic to the argument but the one-party South didn’t eliminate competition within the party, especially at state level. The worst authoritarianism was local, with courthouse rings and domineering sheriffs.

I’m reminded of the Russian expression “You can’t understand Russia by reason (alone)” умом Россию не понять. I’m afraid the same can now be said about the US.

Your post on my feed followed immediately after a story on the millions of hours of lost sleep among Ukrainians. We are being bombarded by lies; they are being subjected to the sound and fury of live ordnance almost every night. Puts things in perspective.

Must read for those interested in Central Asia and Russia’s regional image. Kyrgyzstani respondents far more likely to lay blame for the war at the feet of Ukrainians rather than Russians and among Kyrgyzstanis attitudes vary by ethnolinguistic background, media use, and dependence on remittances.
