A male mandarin duck on the balcony outside my old kitchen, sizing up the women in the river below.

That's not true. When I lived in that house there were always about five male mandarin ducks competing for one female.

Put on some quite nice clothes but then looked outside and immediately felt like a man of slovenly appearance.

When will people learn? All English people want is - no fireworks, no noise after 8pm, no unexpected visitors, no phone calls, no noise before 8pm and the sweet release of death - is that too much to ask?

"The blood was only ever a means to an end," the vampire confessed in the interview.

"To what end?" the reporter asked.

"Blood carries vigor, life force, vital energy. That's what we feed on."

"So how do you get it, if not through blood?"

"These days, we make doom scrolling apps to drain it."

Petition: Ban the use of smart glasses with recording capability in public spaces We ask the Government to ban smart glasses with cameras in public spaces. We believe they allow secret filming, and undermine privacy, safety and the publicโ€™s right to know when theyโ€™re being recorded...

I found a petition to ban smart glasses in public spaces that needs a bit of a boost, if anyone else feels strongly about this: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/73...

I *think* Iโ€™ve seen all of them although some are slightly conjectural (like I donโ€™t actually know exactly what 1960s tv aerials were supposed to look like but I think that one is a bit funny)

Ooh, one final thought: a disadvantage of sim-subbing thatโ€™s easy to forget is that you lose the opportunity to revise your work in line with feedback from other markets (or just your own evolving style). Sim-subbing gets your work out quickly, but it also โ€œburnsโ€ markets quickly

22.01.2026 12:59 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The exception is if a โ€œunicornโ€ market opens up suddenly and I have something I really want to send them thatโ€™s already out on sub elsewhere. That doesnโ€™t happen often though.

22.01.2026 11:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In practice I rarely simsub as it makes it more complicated to keep track of things. I generally have at least half a dozen stories โ€œon the goโ€ at once and there are always markets opening and closing and responses coming in and itโ€™s just easier to keep to one story-one market at a time.

22.01.2026 11:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I suppose I see it as kind of an unofficial contract? You say no simsubs and youโ€™ll get back to me in x days, Iโ€™ll stick to the no simsubs bit if you stick to your promised timeline.

Dropping off my 8yo at school today, I said โ€œgood morningโ€ to one of his classmates.
โ€œIโ€™m wearing my Stranger Things pantsโ€ he told me.

I think thatโ€™s the first time anyone has started a conversation with me by describing their underwear.

The US granted visas to Jews but only allowed 30,000 in from Germany a year. You had to wait for your number to come up.

Meet Robert Smallbones. An unassuming British diplomat who 'hacked' this system so effectively (saving 48 THOUSAND Jews) the UK government kept his scheme secret for decades /1 ๐Ÿงต
