Still worth watching!

Then I recommend watching season 4, with Jodie Foster in Alaska.

I’m excited that I’m speaking at Git Merge! git-merge.com

If you want to learn about my horror stories of learning zig / rust and libgit2, and how the git remote protocol works, come on down.

I’m pretty satisfied with my photo choice.

At AWS, I led the team that built EC2's Nitro virtualization stackβ€” C code deployed to 500K servers. Biggest lesson? Pre-production testing has limits. You must embrace safe production testing.

My new blog explains how Nitro did it, and how Junction brings this to any Kubernetes team.

The post is not anti-monorepo, not by any means. but it is truthful about what you are signing up for. And I love the framework to think about this problem, which is you should optimize for fast changes and iteration loops for developers.

"The greatest power and biggest lie of the monorepo is that it is possible to make atomic commits across your entire codebase."

Some gems:

"Any operation over your repository that needs to be fast must be O(change) and not O(repo)."

"Why do you want a monorepo?... You WILL NOT end up with an experience as tight as google31 or fbsource2. You WILL inherit a new set of problems that many-repo setup did not have."

The Ingredients of a Productive Monorepo

This has to be the best blog post I have read on monorepos. This highly resonates from my experience as well. Must read if you are considering migrating to one.

I am all for building things fairly and ecologically, but the current system is not working. If we don’t build at all, we can’t modernize and change with what cities need.

This was such a beautiful and tragic read.

I loved the juxtaposition of city planning. Wondering what SF could have been if we just said yes instead of no.

Similarly, I read Erza Klein’s Abundance, which I also enjoyed

I mean we might need to go back to scp code or binaries onto VMs and rebooting them at this rate.

I have been diving deep into Ryan Coogler and he is becoming one of my favorite directors.

Best thing I learned is that the vampires are inspired by death in Puss and Boots 2!!!

That movie is also a sleeper hit!!

The reason why I keep banging my head it is that I touch it once or twice a year and I get dependable automation for a long time. So it’s definitely worth it. But wish it wasn’t so painful to work with.

Every time I work in Docker, I feel like I had amnesia and forgot the magic incantation to make Docker do what I want.

Of course in reality, this is not true and I get better/faster every time I do something in it, and always learn (or relearn) something. But doesn’t feel that way when I’m in it.

This is an insane record for a movie director.

He should be able to make whatever movie he wants given the ROI.

Sinners is so fantastical. Go see it in IMAX if you can!

Do you want to manage these machines?

Do you want to be the bespoke expert that knows how computers work to fix the machines?

Do you want to thread between both?

The Software Engineering Identity Crisis - Annie Vella Many of us became software engineers because we found our identity in building things. Not managing things. Not overseeing things. Building things. With our own hands, our own minds, our own code. But...

A great read. Software engineering is changing with AI and it’s not a bad idea to strategize what you want as this happens.
