30 years ago this is what I hoped video games would become. So happy games like this are being made

So, thank you to Cyan for putting that making-of videon on the Myst CD. Wouldn't be here without it โค๏ธ
03.10.2025 17:04 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0None of it turned into making games, but about a decade later I finally got into games - as an IT admin. All that time learning the basics of how of how a game comes together turned out to be instrumental in being able to support the world class dev team at IW, which led to me becoming a producer.
03.10.2025 17:03 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Around this time I was also teaching myself how to build maps in Wolf3D/Doom/Duke3D. Took a few community college courses in high school on an early version of Maya, spent hundreds of hours tinkering with Photoshop from 2.0 onward, and messed with webdev along the way too
03.10.2025 17:02 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I taught myself how to "script" in HyperCard while my older brother went about making all the art and we put together a few 10-15 minute point and click adventure games on our dad's Mac Centris 610
We got our hands on Infini-D and taught ourselves modeling/animation, and I got a copy of FutureBASIC
When I was 12 I got Myst for Christmas and fell in love (was huge Sierra / Lucas Arts adventure game fan), and this making-of video on the CD was the first time I saw any kind of game development. From then on I knew what I was supposed to do
03.10.2025 16:57 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0@digitalfoundry.bsky.social Do you guys use off the shelf software for your framerate/frametime overlays or is that a custom job?
Often in dev I wish I could replicate it, as running extra profiling to get the data isn't always possible
One benefit of having COVID this week is that I've had the time to clean up my email inboxes
Gotta keep things nice and tidy for the daily dump of spam to arrive, ya know?
It's just your average fifo system and they have limited capacity
11.09.2025 04:30 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0New job listing posted! Totally biased, but I think we're on to something really neat here. Come help us make it a reality!

29.08.2025 18:39 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This was how I learned about Knightmare. Went down a little YouTube rabbit hole. Holy shit this show was incredible! Super jealous
27.08.2025 01:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We don't plan to get much bigger, making openings here more and more rare as we fill out our team. If you care deeply about making fun games with crazy talented people, check us out!
02.08.2025 18:18 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I really should just bite the bullet and make the switch. 25 years of muscle memory is gunna be hard to overwrite ๐ญ

11.07.2025 05:48 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'd pay the people that literally create the value of the company so they could create more of it.
Having experienced profit sharing and company stock in my career -- profit sharing wins every time. Happier devs, better games, aligned with publisher goal to /sell videogames/

10.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0What I wouldn't give to hear the backroom calculus in terms of deciding when to trigger this, hedging against the team revolting and putting shipping in danger...
This is why we need a healthier industry that would give the dev team enough power to give Krafton the bird and put their biz in a pinch
My heart goes out to everyone at Unknown Worlds. What a shitty situation
This industry is a really crappy place a lot of the time, but only because the people not actually involved in making games hold all the power
Reminded of ATVI blowing up Infinity Ward because the bonuses due to the dev team
Cool quote from an ATVI exec email thread months before they fired our studio heads and took away our bonuses, "we are paying way too many people way too much, we need to find a way to put caps on our bonus payouts"
Well, Premiere can't talk to licensing servers so I guess I'm done working on this project for tonight. Thanks Adobe!
09.07.2025 05:36 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0His yearly take home is more than the burn rate of any team I've been on
He's made enough over the last 7years to have nearly paid for the dev budget of every game I've worked on
After shipping Apex he told us we saved his job and owed us a nice bottle of wine. Never got the wine (or any bonuses)
I miss when there was a hot dog guy outside Home Depot
We used to have standards
Games media deserve better
If I had an extra pile of cash lying around I'd totally throw it at the problem, but alas :(
To eBay I go, I guess :(
06.04.2025 05:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My wife and I are working through South of Midnight this weekend, really enjoying it so far. Loving the setting, story, music, and characters -- but the character and environment art are the biggest treat
Congrats to everyone at Compulsion Games on the release!
Damn, think I just fried my 3080 :(
