The incompetence is staggering. To have 4 votes and not even legal experts can figure out what the recommendations are is wild (I’m not positive either- the meeting was profoundly incoherent)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Governor Polis Orders Flags to Half-Staff to Honor the Anniversary of September 11th and the Passing of Charlie Kirk

Someone shot up my kid's school today, and our governor is paying tribute to a guy who thought that is an acceptable price to pay for having the Second Amendment.

Jared Polis has failed Colorado.

Getting sick of the term β€œpolitical violence” when a public figure closely aligned w/one ideology or other is a victim. ICE is also political violence. Armies are also political violence. Not sure of my point - just wish for a term that doesn’t immediately wall an act like this off from all the rest

RFK Jr. is living in a pretend anti-vax world Unfortunately, he is wreaking havoc in the real one.

In a marathon hearing on Thursday before the Senate Finance Committee, RFK Jr. faced a barrage of questions from senators who were outraged by his recent actions.

In some cases, Kennedy appeared to promote flat-out lies.

We're absolutely leaderless
Yesterday Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader and, by default, the leader of the Democratic opposition to the Trump regime, said this:

"Donald Trump promised that he would lower housing costs on day one. Here's a suggestion for the Trump administration: try to legislate, and maybe we can find common ground in order to get something done for the American people."
For the past several months Trump and the Republicans have been shredding the Constitution in unprecedented ways, building concentration camps, and sending out a literal secret police force to disappear people without cause or hearing. In just the past few days Trump stated, as if it's unassailable fact, that he is a dictator and that anything he does is, by default, legal. Not an hour before Jeffries said what he said above, Trump said that he is going to send more troops into cities all over America, ratcheting up the fascism afoot to even greater degrees. That has been confirmed by Illinois governor JB Pritzker, who announced that Trump has sent the Texas National Guard to Great Lakes Naval Base outside Chicago, where they will soon be deployed to target Mexican Independence Day celebrations on September 16.

I understand that politicians of Jeffries' ilk spend about 95% of their time listening to colleagues and consultants who decided, in 1997 or something, that the word "bipartisan" is some sort of talisman that ensures political success. But to say such a thing, now, when the wheels are coming off, the engine is on fire, and hostile troops are being used to subdue American cities for authoritarian ends is about the most out-of-touch and tone deaf thing imaginable.

Jeffries and others who want to pretend that what is happening right now is completely normal have absolutely no credibility. Jeffries himself has, in the past, called Trump a "wannabe king" who is "attacking the American people." Just three days ago he said "Republicans are psychotically consumed by revenge" and that "these extremists are unfit to govern and dangerous to the American way of life." But now he wants to find common ground with him and with them? Via legislation despite the fact that Trump has quite clearly decided that Congress doesn't matter anymore and that he has no interest in dealing with it? We cannot believe people like Hakeem Jeffries when they say they understand the gravity of this moment, because regardless of their occasional lip service to it, they don't act like anything particularly bad is happening. Because, I suppose, nothing bad is happening to them, personally.

This is why Democratic politicians poll so terribly. This is why people are so despondent. We are in an existential battle for the Constitutional order, and we're currently losing it, badly. Yet the general putatively in charge of that battle uses the exceedingly little amount of time the national media affords him to talk about how we need to find common ground and resume business-as-usual with the hostile force he himself admits are dangerous and unfit to govern.

It's always been harder to maintain democracy than it is to impose authoritarianism, but it's impossible to do so when those charged with defending democracy don't seem to fucking care.

I pissed off a bunch of people being mad at Chuck Schumer this morning so I suppose I should share what I wrote about Hakeem Jeffries in today's newsletter.
