Text reading: Vickers shrugged and said, "Well, that’s too bad. I’m sick and tired of taking directions from you.” He mumbled a quick “thanks” to the bartender as he delivered his drink and took a long swig. Setting down the glass, he said, “Imagine my surprise seeing your vehicle outside, knowing you are sitting here in this nice air-conditioned bar, tipping back drinks while you have me out there sneaking through the mosquito-infested woods, sweating my balls off in this lousy weather, trying to grab a little girl who is never out of her mother’s sight.”
Quint sneered. “That's your job.”
Vickers slammed his hand on the bar and said, “No. That's our job, you arrogant prick.” With the word "nice" highlighted in yellow.

Text reading: He was so impressed with the kid, with how brave she was, how quickly she’d made friends with his dog, how she’d bounced back after her abduction. He knew in that moment that he would die trying to keep her safe, and that realization nearly took his breath away. Life had taught him not to care and here he was, caring a whole hell of a lot. Damn it.

He wanted to know the backstory, the reason behind this search. He told himself he wanted these answers to better arm himself for what might lie ahead, to increase their chances of a successful search and rescue. Yet, deep inside, he wondered if it wasn’t because he wanted to know more about the woman and her child...for other reasons. Reasons he wasn’t ready to explore.

He’d just met her, for crying out loud. But there was something about her, something that brought out a desire to protect her and a desperate need to find a little girl he’d never even met.

Text reading: Hearing the words made Anthony Boradoni want to smash the phone into a million little pieces and hurl the chair he was sitting in against the glass in front of him. He couldn’t do that of course, not only because the watchful guards would throw him in solitary in a heartbeat, but also because his father would accuse him of having a tantrum. And right now, he needed his father.
Lowering his head into his hands, he simply said, “That’s unfortunate.” He knew every word of their conversation was being monitored and recorded, so they had to choose their words carefully. “Jimmy always was a disappointment.”

Text that reads: On the other end of the line, Mamie Jackson immediately knew something was terribly wrong. “What is it? What’s happened?”

“It’s Jenny. She’s missing. We’re at the fair. I started feeling sick and Jenny was holding my hand, and then she wasn’t.” Libby sobbed into the phone.

From the other end of the line she heard her aunt say, “I’m on my way” just before the call disconnected.

Text that reads: Brady crossed his arms over his chest and looked like he was ready to spit fire. “Damn it. Yes, I have your number. But I do wish you’d talk some sense into your niece.”

“If I was able to talk sense into her, she never would have moved to California and married that son of a bitch I warned her about. I only met him once, and that was all it took for me to see he was no good, but that girl is stubborn as an ox, always has to find things out the hard way. Short of tackling her to the ground and shackling her to that Ferris Wheel over there, there’s no way I can stop her from going with you. That little girl is her entire life, and she will do anything to find her.”

Brady thew his hands in the air. “Why did I agree to this? Why did I let myself get involved?” He slapped himself in the forehead, “Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.”

Snapshot of text reading: As it turned out, Libby did sleep. A fitful sleep filled with dreams of Jenny being pulled from her arms by faceless people, dreams of her little girl on a boat sailing away from shore while her own feet were stuck in knee-deep mud, unable to help her. Even though Jenny was sound asleep beside her, the dreams haunted her and left her restless.

After carefully removing herself from the bed without waking her daughter, she pulled the covers up and gently tucked them around Jenny. Her sweet girl was sleeping soundly, and Libby took a moment to just stand by the bed looking down at her. Her everything. And to think she could have lost her. Ignoring the lump in her throat she headed to the kitchen where she found Mamie sitting at the table, a cup of coffee in her hand and a shot gun across her lap.

Snapshot of words: Seeing the sadness and fear in her niece’s eyes nearly broke Mamie’s heart, which was saying something as her heart had been through a hell of a lot over the years. “I wish I had the answer. Here’s what I do know, Jenny’s abduction wasn’t random, and Quinten Baxter is somehow involved. I also believe someone slipped something in your drink at the fair, to make you sick or worse, with the sole purpose of providing an opportunity for someone to snatch Jenny away from you. I’m not sure whether the motive was to hurt you, or hurt Jenny, and since I can’t imagine a reason for doing either, I’m at a loss.
