One of many highlights during @maineaudubon.bsky.social’s Borestone Naturalist Weekend was this family of River Otters on Sunset Pond, viewed from the porch of the lodge!

We looked closely for Scopoli’s Shearwaters on the Cashes Ledge (Maine) trip on Saturday, but couldn’t find any. Here’s a fun composite of a Cory’s banking, showing how dark (or light) p10 can look as the sun hits it.

What an insane morning! Got back from AZ at 2AM, and one of the first birds at our 7AM Evergreen Cemetery bird walk (in the rain) was a CERULEAN WARBLER!! A literal dream come true after 11 years of leading these walks.

SNEAK PEEK: eBird Checklist Media
YouTube video by Doug Hitchcox SNEAK PEEK: eBird Checklist Media

It’s still in beta, but I made a video previewing Checklist Media, coming soon to eBird. I already spend too much time perusing the Macaulay Library, and this will only make that worse (but so much better).

The birding world lost another legend with the passing of Victor Emanuel.

I never got to bird with him, but he gave a heartfelt & inspiring talk a few years ago on his book, One More Warbler. Second photo is a few quotes he included in it, which seem especially poignant today.

I do think the world would be a better place if we can get the most people to see the most birds. And you can help me with my pursuit of that goal by subscribing and learning more about birds and birding: youtube.com/dhitchcox

This will always be too niche to ever become “successful” but I’m hoping it’ll eventually be sustainable. I love my day-job but it’s hard to save for new equipment, so you’ll know when I’ve hit “success” with the channel because I’ll be recording in higher than 720p.

Unsure of how to measure success, I set the goal of qualifying for the YouTube Partner Program. That requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. Every day I plotted my growth (below) and while 1k subs took 6mo, 4k hrs would take 12 long form videos and 11mo. Success!! 💪
