Reading this was a whirlwind romance, a seduction of self and what is yet to become. Brie shares vulnerably from her lived experience and the sensual, embodied wisdom she has accumulated along the way. She extends an invitation to more: more love, more pleasure, more creativity, more awareness, more presence, more possibility. What might be possible if more of us were turned on?

It seems like reading books is an underutilized skill. Y'all don't have to read on screens and snack on immediacy.
Pick up a book. Something funny or escapist. Something historical to learn from what's happened before. An autobiography of someone who has persisted and resisted. Slow down. Feast.

Quick handbook for anyone feeling any sort of thing about the current administration. Learn a little from history, get practical and specific tips & strategies for responding to the present and preparing for what may yet come. I would push back on a few things (there are non-TERF-authored novels highlighting resistance, for example) but overall this is a helpful, concise, clear reference point for all who would resist tyranny and seek mutual liberation and flourishing.

I was about to give it 4.75 and say that I wanted to give it five stars but needed a little more resolution or clarity...and then I realized that in fact I love this book exactly as it is. It asks tremendous questions and doesn't stoop to offer saccharine answers. The characters feel real and complicated and loveable and sometimes infuriating in a way that's all so deeply human. The exploration of life and death and art and legacy and love and what matters...I think I want my hospice chaplain colleagues to read this and have a book club. Then I'll amend this review.

"[T]his novel...depicts generations of queer couplings w/o flinching. Avoiding the tragic queer narrative, Akbar portrays queer relationships as complicated, tender, full of ups & downs. In Martyr!, queer ppl simply live their lives & love each other; refreshing & masterfully told." (masters review)

A lot of the β€œhow to disagree well” stuff (which I have also produced) was based on the idea that we were all playing the game of what @kjephd.bsky.social calls β€œpluralist” or β€œTechnocratic” politics. But trump and co are playing a different game. That seems like β€œbad faith” from the point of…

One tip - it appears that the default setting for new accounts only allows followers, not friends. If you want more engagement, you need to allow friend requests from everyone:

1. Go to Preferences in the menu bar
2. Adjust your settings to allow friend requests

Strange. The story has potential but the author's style didn't draw me in. There were a few really beautiful sentences or moments, but overall I didn't find it compelling. The main character was my least favorite; the other characters were more interesting and the horses actually were my favorite characters. I think the author said too much about some things and neglected to really tease out the themes and character development that would have made it great.

"You think there isn't anyone as ordinary as you," June had said. "And that makes you angry. But you always choose to be kind, even when that's not how you feel inside, and that's what makes witches out of ordinary folk."
