I think it is crucial to hold a vision of e.g. information access where OpenAI, Google, Meta, etc in fact are not granted the right to push their technologies of isolation (h/t @hypervisible.blacksky.app ) into our every sphere of interaction.

Some of his videos are good. Some are not. This book is very disappointing to this sociolinguist, and I'm only on chapter 1.

avoid people being able to search posts for terms so they can be awful to people, in a book about the influence of algorithms on language use and change.

I'm barely into the first chapter and it's just so obvious that this kid has never taken one single sociolinguistics or language contact class. His knowledge is extremely shallow. For ex I just read a paragraph where he says we self-censor non-curse words to "be silly" with no mention of trying to+

Did you know algorithms are the only cause of language innovation and also that internet language is the only form of written colloquial register

Hey Linguists Over A Certain Age: according to etymologynerd, we don't study the effects of social media algorithms on language change because we "find it hard to keep up with the fast pace of language change"

Is anyone with access to Columbia University's library system willing to submit a scan request for me? I'm in the zines portion of my alt-press comps & CU has copies Cyanide #1&2 from an ancient late 90s online friend which I lost a good 20 years ago. Obviously will pay for any associated costs!πŸ—ƒοΈ

I have to try to keep the puppy quiet for the next five or so days after her spay surgery on Thursday. She has gabapentin and trazodone on board to help keep her calm and it isn't. 😭 (No advice please)

As many have been saying for a while, sure seems like the β€œwho could AI replace” question has the opposite answer to what the bosses expect
