07.11.2025 12:08 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Our goal was therefore to engage with the classic & contemporary arguments given by folks in the child-innovator camp, specifically by reviewing (and crediting!) all those who worked hard to dispute their claims over the years. Hope that gives some clarity, alongside the obvious press release 'buzz'
10.09.2025 10:59 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I find it endlessly frustrating that one of the biggest empirical findings from sociolinguistics is consistently ignored. Change doesn't come from children making mistakes. Change comes from adolescents incrementing existing probabilistic patterns.
I haven't read this paper but hopefully it's good.
Sometimes it depresses me how little impact decades of the study of sociolinguistic variation and change has had on other areas of the language sciences (I get the same feeling about gesture studies), but I didn't even realise that this idea was prevalent in some areas of my own field!

#UKLVC15 you've been wonderful. Thank you to everyone who organised, presented, asked questions, had intelligent sensitive conversations...all the things. If that was my academic swansong (tbc), it was a pretty great one.

02.09.2025 13:09 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0As a reader I appreciate a sentence like "A says X, but haven't taken into account Y, which means we can only rely on this as far as Z..." - having trained formally and phonetically quite separately it's really helpful actually having someone think through the crossover

09.07.2025 13:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If anyone knows anyone who's successfully transitioned from academic Linguistics to data-type work in industry please could you put me in touch? I'd love some advice on what sort of jobs to look at and how to translate my skills and training in a way companies will understand

Norway considers hiring US researchers that would associate with running projects like my ICONIC project. Specifics are not defined yet, but if you are a postdoctoral researcher working on iconicity and would like to come to Oslo and work with me, shoot me a PM.

Okay #rstats folks and Bayesian enthusiasts. I want to fit monotonic splines in brms. I found forum posts from 2019-2021. You can fit them with scam, but the package doesnβt play well with the standard post-processing of mgcv. Has anyone figured out a way to get this done by now?
