We don’t live in a neutral marketplace of ideas. We live in an attention economy shaped by algorithms, tribal identity, outrage incentives, and profit models that reward engagement over accuracy.

So they reverted the government to a spoils system. Musk awarded contracts to himself and Trump sold meme coins by destroying the sociotechnical systems that prevented corruption, which are also the systems for protecting Musk and Trump from intra-bureaucracy backstabbing. Which is now happening.

We at 18F were fired by Musk for our perceived political affiliations. But we were nonpartisan, like all civil servants. Musk and Trump don't appear to believe that truly nonpartisan conduct is possible, or that public service is possible.

The whole reason America has a nonpartisan civil service is to avoid appointees fighting with the President.

The point is to keep James A. Garfield from getting assassinated. Or Elon Musk from siccing a mob on you. But Trump decided to destroy this safeguard.
