Title:
SOME GRAMMATICAL VOICES FOR USE IN SCIENTIFIC WRITING

ACTIVE VOICE
e.g.
Our team collected samples and then we tested them.

CLICKBAIT VOICE
e.g.
We collected some samples...
You won't believe what happened next!

PASSIVE VOICE
e.g.
Samples were collected and tested.

HAIKU VOICE
e.g.
Quiet science lab.
Workers arrive with samples.
The testing begins.

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE VOICE
e.g. We did all the collecting and testing.
No need to thank us.
Just doing our job.

CONSPIRACY VOICE
e.g.
Mysterious "Samples" were harvested and covertly "tested" by so-called scientists.

Specific post-transplant complications seen in the early cohort (1998–2005, n = 22) have been reported previously,6 but they included primary graft nonfunction, fungal sepsis, cerebrospinal abscess, wound infection, malignancy, and urine leaks. There was decreased overall allograft and patient survival to 3 years. Similar to these earlier commercial transplant recipients, the 2005 to 2013 recipients (n = 49) who received 50 renal allografts were ignorant of the donor selection process. Of these 50 transplant procedures, 27 were performed in South Asia, 13 in East Asia, 5 in Africa, 4 in West Asia, and 1 in South America. Medical documentation remained often incomplete, and translation was sometimes needed. Notable infectious complications (2005–2013) included hepatitis B seroconversion (n = 2), hepatitis C seroconversion (n = 5) with active hepatitis (n = 3) and fulminant hepatic failure (n = 1), pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 2), and extended spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli urosepsis (n = 1). Surgical complications included 2 abdominal wall hernias and a type A dissecting aortic aneurysm occurring 2 months post-transplant. Only 1 patient in the 2005 to 2013 cohort required hospitalization on arrival, compared with 7 in the earlier cohort.6

Organ Trafficking: How Germans Buy New Kidneys in Kenya Germans in need of new kidneys are heading to Kenya to buy one. The donors are frequently suffering from bitter poverty. Behind the scheme is an Israeli whom the authorities have been after for years.

The illegal kidney transplant trade continues

Now centered in Kenya, with donors from Africa, Azerbaijan and elsewhere

Recipients from Western Europe, Russia, and other places

This feels very topical, as we discussed organ trafficking at the UK SpR Club meeting today.

I had the misfortune of caring for repatriated patients who developed fungal infections in their grafts following transplantation with trafficked organs, and I still remember the ethical dilemmas we faced.

Donor-derived membranous nephropathy
We discuss two cases who received kidneys from the same donor with membranous nephropathy identified in the implantation biopsy, and how possibly these organs can be used for transplantation
