Laatste keer dat we Mercury Rev zagen - ondertussen al vele jaren geleden - was in het Koninklijk Circus. Een beetje vreemd dus om hen aan het werk te zien in de veel kleinschaligere omgeving van De Kreun. Maar ons hoor je niet klagen.

Adrian Crowley stelde vanavond Measure of Joy voor in het Cactus Café. Donkere parels als Swimming In The Quarry contrasteerden met het mysterieuze Genevieve of the Mountain. Zijn bariton gleed over groovy bossanova-tempo’s, met Cherry Blossom Soft Confetti als verrassend slot.

Tussen al het geweld en de waanzin van nu is het belachelijk irrelevant, maar het raakt me meer dan zou moeten: de BBC blokkeert haar radiozenders en app voor niet-Britten. Voorlopig werkt mijn app nog, en ik kan het omzeilen, maar toch voelt de wereld weer wat grijzer en kleiner.

Tunng's live comeback was a rousing mix of playful folk and experimental electronics. The six band members' harmonies guided the audience through an adventurous sonic landscape, with highlights such as Everything Else and Snails. Towards the end, it even turned into a party.
