One of the biggest blunders (when well-intentioned) and betrayals (when not) in Democratic rhetoric over the years is their impenetrable insistence that what voters respond to is somebody who begins by finding common ground with their opponent, no matter who that opponent is or what that ground is.

Leaders who are sympathetic to the call of bigotry and exclusion do not have my support, and that’s just all there is to it. Some things are complex. This one is simple.

You can, in fact, just decide to start a thing. I do it all of the time and it's a good way to execute ideas rather to just critique others' ideas. Critique by doing as Michelangelo said. Critique by DOING.

A great many of us have been dickmatized. I pray we will be dickmatized many more times in the days and nights to cum. A man treating you right and fucking you even better can have you out here looking CRAZY.

But grouptexts, sex toys, and therapy exist for a reason! LET THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN.

The way we win future elections is by having politicians who genuinely want to turn this country around.

Pick the Mamdanis. Ditch the Cuomos.

Moving to the center is how you compete for the tiny sliver of Undecided likely-voters.

Doing the right thing is how you inspire the millions who don't usually vote.

I STOP WRITING THE POEM

to fold the clothes. No matter who lives or who dies, I'm still a woman.
I'll always have plenty to do.
I bring the arms of his shirt together. Nothing can stop our tenderness. I'll get back to the poem. I'll get back to being a woman. But for now there's a shirt, a giant shirt
in my hands, and somewhere a small girl standing next to her mother watching to see how it's done.

What do we want? FIGHTING DEMS!

And when do we want them? AFTER THE INCUMBENTS DIE OF OLD AGE SO THE FIGHTERS DON'T HURT THEIR FEELINGS, AND ALSO NOT UNTIL THE STARS ARE RIGHT, AND NOT UNLESS THEY ANSWER ME THESE RIDDLES THREE

Andy Hall &
@ahall_research
In 2018, Dan Thompson and I published a paper in the APSR estimating large vote share and turnout effects for the nomination of more-extreme House candidates in the 2006--2014 period. Recently, Adam Bonica showed us an important imbalance in the data from our paper that makes us doubt our findings. We've written an update to the paper explaining this issue here:

We have four main takeaways from this exercise:
(1) The evidence in our sample from 2006--2014 that more-extreme nominees cause large changes in a party's vote share or share of general-election turnout is far weaker than we previously thought, and should not be relied on.
(2) Because our sample of years does not provide a sufficiently large, stable effect on vote share, the design is unsuitable for understanding whether there is an underlying relationship

Big dealβ€”after correcting, it turns out that moderate candidates do not perform better than extreme candidates in general elections.

Kudos to Andy, Dan, and Adam for updating a key question in political science

In the piece below, I talk a lot about mass messaging (posters, stickers, etc.) to keep the focus not just on enmity towards Trump and Musk but the impact of their actions. In case it's helpful, I put together some examples! Not perfect, but they get the job done (feel free to steal/share)

Is it a little awkward to make direct demands of MoCs? Sure. Am I likely to emcee another rally like this? Maybe not. But if we sacrifice accountability for access, we're not going to build a united opposition. If we don't ask, we shouldn't be surprised if MoCs don't fight.

This is on all of us.

Fire-Related Mutual Aid Efforts to Support and Some Must-Reads Kindness is essential in these times, and it will continue to be.

This edition of my newsletter includes mutual aid efforts to support and uplift, preparedness resources (for us all), some must-reads, and some thoughts about how we process disaster and look after each other amid disaster. (Yes, I am on a break, but this felt important)
