They provide scaffolding by modeling fluent reading, pronunciation & intonation. This is why in primary ed we read every day to children. Reading out loud, modelling the desired behaviour enhances a child's interest in texts.

Audiobooks help by building vocabulary, comprehension & fluency. They are a wonderful stepping stone for reluctant readers exposing them to complex language so that they can keep pace with peers.

Success in education offers the opportunity for choice in later life. It also contributes to a healthy progress 8 score which schools are measured on. RfP under pins those winning results. It can change children's outcomes and change lives for the better. Go All In!

The big campaigns are necessary because many children stop reading in secondary education. Reading for pleasure is the biggest indicator of the future success of a child. We must maintain the intrinsic motivation for reading that occurred in primary for the sake of our future economy.

The right person really can make a difference, but it is difficult to do it alone. We all need to model the behaviour we desire from the children, read when they read, enthuse about texts, share what we love and go all in.

Our own children couldn't read or even talk when we started to read to them. That pleasurable experience & time together influenced their enjoyment & nurtured their own will to read. It supported the development of the intrinsic motivation we strive for. Reading role models are essential.

Let the children read what they want in their own time. You can introduce the texts you think they should be reading in the classroom. Push them to read your choice of texts and whilst a few may love it, many will just stop reading.

This is why schools need a reading champion or librarian. Someone who can enthuse about all sorts of texts, build relationships, meet the children's interests and support their reading journeys. Pick them up when they fall or need a break & point them in the direction of something they will love.

RfP has declined hugely in the last ten years, screen time and the lack of social interaction are believed to be a part of that decline. Lots of chat in social reading environments with cushions and a biscuit is helping us build communities of readers in our school.

Research shows that reading volume significantly influences the development of reading skills, enhances vocabulary and comprehension.

That's true! Which is why we make reading the reward rather than reward reading. Our RfP sessions are fun, social, relaxed and sacrosanct to the children. They look forward to visiting the library.

The skill does influence the will, but this works both ways. The will also influences the skill.

The TaRs research led by @teresacremin.bsky.social and the team at @openuni-rfp.bsky.social specifically targets choice. Learner led, texts that tempt. Getting to know the students and their interests is key. We champion the choice of the child. All reading counts.

& mobile reading rarely count.'

This isn't my experience of the research. I wonder what @teresacremin.bsky.social and the @openuni-rfp.bsky.social team think of this.
I could rephrase it & suggest that when some teachers count pleasure, they almost always privilege printed literary fiction...

We had a great time touring France and spending time with my secondary school French exchange student. 40 years of friendship.
The library in Riom was fab.

I couldn't find The Last Bear by @hannahgold.bsky.social in the library in Riom, France, but it is available in Saint Beauzire which is where we are staying.

The enthusiasm for their work moved me to happy tears.
The one recurring theme was surprise at how very little effort made such an impact on the children's response to reading.
Of course we celebrated with a story.
