This evening members of @newarktrg.bsky.social presented their Examples of Practice.
The enthusiasm for their work moved me to happy tears.
The one recurring theme was surprise at how very little effort made such an impact on the children's response to reading.
Of course we celebrated with a story.
On this day, four years ago, I entered the world of education.
My work is rewarding, possibly more than anything else I have ever done.
One national award later, smiles everyday and an absolute passion to change lives. I make my living sharing stories with children.

16.06.2025 07:49 β π 15 π 14 π¬ 0 π 0Has anyone else noticed a change in children's habits this year?
After many consecutive years of literary consumption only one child has borrowed a Harry Potter book this year & the same with David Williams.
Yet Katya Balen, Lisa Thompson, D Pilkey, A Blabey, R Telgemeier ++ fly from the shelves.
Thank you for your kind words. He remains with me in my heart, mind and some fabulous stories x
15.06.2025 13:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is the first Father's Day without my Dad, but I have the fondest memories of Saturday afternoons listening to him reading stories like Winnie the Pooh and Mr Pink Whistle.
Winnie was a book he kept from his own childhood. Reading together is one of my most precious memories.
I think it's quite obvious from some of this morning's book returns what children enjoy reading at our school.
13.06.2025 17:08 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I shared My Beautiful Voice by Joseph Coehlo with Year 5 today.
Many children recognised themselves.
More than a handful came to speak with me afterwards about how anxiety affects them.
What a wonderful story & a great opportunity to offer support, understanding & to build relationships.
Year six was exactly the year group I was thinking of. Thank you so much for the confirmation that it's a great read.
Our year 6's always love to read around their WWII topic. I am excited to find something new.
When you get near to the end of the school year having spent every penny of the RfP budget and then you find another book that you know the children will love.
This sounds like a great read.
Added to my list.
I cancelled my X account and came here to get away from this piece of work.
No thank you.
We have NOTHING in common.
I am here for the kidslit and the edu community only, not this or even a parody of this. β¬οΈ
That sounds great, will check it out.

I don't know if I will sleep tonight. I have too many solutions to this puzzle floating around my brain.
A thought for the new term. READING FOR PLEASURE is the most important thing in education: more important than any test scores, or any of the hoops we make our kids jump through. So whatever else you do, please never stop helping kids find books to read & love. It will change their lives! #literacy

It's one of those stories where some children will recognise themselves. He said very few words even at 3 yrs old. He liked to be barefoot. His teachers found him disruptive in class and yet he was a genius.
The final page carries an inspiring message to our future scientists. Well worth purchasing.
The perfect book to share to end British Science Week and to celebrate the birthday and work of Albert Einstein.

When Cucumber Lost His Cool by Michelle Robinson.
One of my favourite picture story books. It has a great rhythm and can't just be read. The children love it most when I rap it.
