I also think the mythology comes from the "elites" who fund the Democratic agenda. The liberal professional class is accustomed to knowledge, decorum, and honest debate having value in their daily interactions. But obviously that doesn't translate to politics.

Many of them truly believed that. Just one example... I had an otherwise smart coworker tell me: "say what you want about the guy, but at least the economy will probably be better".

A lot of Trump’s appeal comes down to the fact that people whose lives are boring & mediocre because they aren’t particularly bright, talented, or motivated, would very much like to hear a story in which actually it’s someone else’s fault.
