I've been able to do that, too! It's the most freeing feeling - even better is when you have two titles you like battling it out. It is freeing when the title is done, and I find the story just falls into place right after that.

I use a sandbox analogy. Sci-Fi and Fantasy are wildly different sandboxes.

Fantasy: You build the sandbox and all within it, so the rules are yours to make and break.

SF: The sandbox comes pre-built, but within it, you build atop a strong foundation, and its limitations inspire creativity.

...but what Cixin Liu does in three books, Pellegrino and Zebrowski effectively do in one (love 3-Body, no dig).

You owe it to yourself to find this one.

...and so many philosophical and theological discussions, this really should be a must read for any sci-fi fan. @quinnsideas.bsky.social's video 3 years ago got me on the hunt for this book, and after my wife found it for me for xmas I dug deep into it again. Think 'The Three Body Problem"...

Oscars: Full List of Nominations 'Sinners' leads the nominees with a record-breaking 16 mentions.

No real surprises with these nominations (except F1 getting a best picture nod). Hope #Sinners does well, but I feel it's One Battle After Another's year, and would love to see Rose Byrne win.

I could go on forever here...

...but the right's emotional immaturity poisons the well. Instead of discovering new media that excites them and branches off from what they grew up on, they stagnate into a lost time and scold people for daring to update and adapt. Like a child.

The Right doesn't get this. They may claim to, but the way the hold onto nostalgic impulses and try to secure these properties under the "Won't someone PLEASE think of the children" guise betrays that. They yearn for the days that everything was created for them...

When I wrote reviews for the @brockpress.bsky.social years ago, I approached criticism with the intended audience front and centre. This is, IMO, the most important aspect of criticism. You can set some standards, but don't judge Happy Gilmore like you would a Wes Anderson film.

The criticisms for the Minecraft Movie were baffling because they seemed to heap criticisms on them - that they're using, god forbid, meme terms that relate to Gen Z - that simply exposed them as out of touch. My kiddos loved the movie, same with Mario, and they didn't care that Peach wore pants.

Right wing vitriol from Gen Z to middle-aged targets media that, ostensibly, ISN'T for them anymore. Look, I get that people may feel nostalgic for these properties, and that doesn't mean they can't watch and enjoy them, but did we forget that the target audience for these are kids? 8-12 yr olds

But they never talk about media for mature audiences. Part of that is because the market is oversaturated with nostalgic content - I would loop 'The Last of Us' in here, and wouldn't consider it the same as, say, a film from A24, or a Scorcese film, etc..., because IP acts differently here...

The most viral of their outrage has centred on Star Wars, Mario, Disney LA remakes, How To Train Your Dragon. They take a lot of "ownership" over these properties, especially when they deviate from their perception of them; when the "correct" version of this is violated, that's when they speak up.

Some solid videos on #Andor pop up from @jessiegender.bsky.social & others got me thinking about the right-wing reactionaries again. The core of this is that the right fails to understand the idea of "audiences" and assume THEY are the only audience, but also that maturity just isn't their thing...

It further opens a door for predators, those little men, to continue their abuse knowing that the winds can change so quickly and they can stoke retaliation. All it takes now is one man to say, "well, Naomi lied, so this other woman could be lying, too."

Nothing good'll come from this

Well, with some egg on my face, I do owe Daniel an apology.

I hate this situation. I hate the damage it will do to survivors of SA who are already struggling to come forward knowing there's real examples like Naomi who lie. I also hate how this is so, so public an example.

Seriously, creative folks: Don't be afraid to let people know your stuff is out there for them, or worry that "now is not the time for that." People are stressed and freaked out and looking for the things that will give them a moment of rest and joy. It is EXACTLY the time for what we do. Tell them.

Daniel Greene is one of many men out there who took what he wanted. Who taught him this? Who teaches other men that this is okay? Ask yourselves this - why was it so easy to come to Naomi's side and yet, knowing all we did about Trump and Musk's behaviour, they're now in charge?

I have little sympathy for the Trump voters who are getting screwed by Trump Admin's decisions right now and their delayed calls for unity (they missed the boat) - resistance is needed. Their continued refusal to self-educate and think critically is why the world is digging deeper into this mess...
