According to witness [redacted by us], Webete began crossing β€œwhen he wasn’t suppose[d] too.” Webete jogged across the northbound lanes of New Hampshire Avenue against the pedestrian signal. Webete then ran out into the southbound lanes of New Hampshire Avenue in an attempt to beat oncoming traffic. Both northbound and southbound vehicular traffic at the intersection with Elton Road were facing solid green signals. [Redacted by us], operating the 2014 Toyota Camry, was traveling southbound facing a solid green signal. There was no evidence of excessive speed, driver impairment, or distraction. Webete failed to obey the functioning pedestrian signals and was ultimately struck by the Toyota.

This 70-year-old man was probably first running for the bus, then running to avoid being hit by a driver. "Dart/dash". Monday, January 17, 2022, 5:37 pm, New Hampshire Ave/650 at Elton Rd, Silver Spring MD. The second pedestrian killed at that spot in 12 months.

Give Nicole Gilenas a Pulitzer for this story. I am dead serious.

Just 🀯 that we have criminalized children... existing in public.

Also ridiculous that the official coding guidance says that "stumbling" is darting or dashing crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/V...

And that a dart or dash is a "non-motorist contributing circumstance" but driver errors are "related factors" and not assumed to contribute to crashes

In official NHTSA data, more people aged 75+ darted or dashed across a road when they were killed than were hit by speeding drivers in the last decade

Anecdotally, I see a lot more speeding drivers than I see dashing elders

I think Mediaand police should avoid using the term "darted" which is almost never used in any other context to describe pedestrian behavior. Very victim blame-y

Esp ridic when it's used to describe an older person's behavior. Pedestrians typically don't move v fast

I'm sure everyone's been talking about this abomination.

The use of the word "darted" to describe a pedestrian's behavior, in this case a child -- very victim blame-y, very windsheildy. Do SUV's dart? Weave? Think about it from the child's perspective.

Pickup trucks are funny because a lot of pickup drivers really ARE rugged and entrepreneurial and they help their friends move. But also a lot of them are just like β€œI’m a boy and I need a boy car.” And car dealers are like β€œthat will be $65k πŸ€‘ for the non sissy real manly man car.”

Occurs to me that this is a good indicator of a walkable, vibrant street corner. And also a civically engaged community.

Serious collisions on 20mph and 30mph roads at record low New data reveals casualties were at a record low in 2024, despite plans to change some speed limits.

"The Welsh government's controversial 20mph policy saw most 30 mph roads change to 20 mph [in September 2023], and the figures showed collisions along these roads decreased by 19% in 2024, compared to 2023.

More Clevelanders are completing college – but not at equitable rates About 40% of the city’s residents now have a college degree, but researchers said white people drove the growth.

"In 2005, about 15% of [Cleveland's] residents held a degree from a four-year college. Now, that number is up to nearly 40%" πŸ‘€

My citizen petition asks for hi-vis crosswalks citywide. But @cityofphoenixaz.bsky.social claims they don't have the budget. They actually do - T2050 funding - an annual multi million $$ budget dedicated to transportation & pedestrian safety.
