The words โIf you want to winโ are in all caps, hunter green blocky font that takes up half the page in the upper left-hand corner. The words โYouโve Got to Fightโ are a burnt orange of the same size and font. The words connect diagonally across the page. The words โA Guide to effective transportation advocacyโ is in black, in smaller font nestled between the block of larger text. Carterโs name is in the lower left corner in black. Behind the words is a stylized, fictionalized metro map that takes up most of the page. The metro map is complex, multi-colored, showing potential expansion plans, transfer stations etc. The book cover background is an off-white. Roughly 6 inches wide, 9 inches tall.
The back cover of โโIf You Want To WIn, Youโve Got To Fight: A Guide To Effective Transportation Advocacyโ by Carter Lavin. There is a red icon of a front-facing bus. A green circle with an icon of a person riding a bike, a yellow diamond with a pedestrian icon in it, a lavender icon of a light rail, and a light blue icon of a cargo bike. At the top it lists the book category as โTRANSPORTATION/ Generalโ Then it has 4 blurbs. โA truly useful handbook for those who want to make change. It will be of great use to those working on transportation โ where these efforts are sorely neededโbut also for anyone trying to improve any part of our society. Politics isnโt magic; itโs work, and this will show you how to get it done most effectively.โ โ Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun โCarter Lavin equips readers with the tools and tactics they need to rally their communities, build strong coalitions, and convince elected officials that a better world is possible. This should be required reading, whether youโre new to the movement or, like me, a veteran in the war on cars.โ โ Doug Gordon, coauthor of Life After Cars โA brilliant showcase of the core tenet of organizing: to build, together. Through countless transportation campaign stories from across the US, Lavin crafts a practical compass that can guide advocates at all stages to win the change our communities deserve.โ โ Cathy Dos Santos, Executive Director of Transit Alliance Miami โA helpful guide for youth or anyone interested in joining the movement for people-first communities. Lavin relays the conditions, tactics, and coalitions necessary for building a movement that is joyous, effective, and widespread.โ โ Elise Joshi, former Executive Director of Gen-Z for Change Cover design: Bruce Gore/ Gore Studio, Inc. Wildfire smoke could soon kill 71,000 Americans every year.
The haze may already kill 40,000 people in the U.S. each year โ the same number who die in traffic crashes. Climate change will only make matters worse.

Obviously I talk a lot about bike/ped safety.
But something that is really crazy is how much less safe you *in a car* since 2010.
In spite of all the additional safety technology, vehicle occupants are less safe today than they were 15 years ago.
Listen, some of the behavior described is annoying, but this moral panic over kids on bikes is so silly compared to the behavior of drivers and the death and injury toll they leave behind. But the harms of car culture are rarely covered because we've just accepted all of that as part of our society.

It's possible to say Charlie Kirk was a hateful racist, misogynistic, homophobic thug who spread dehumanizing propaganda that hurt millions & eroded democracy.
AND
He didn't deserve to die. Political violence is unacceptable regardless of the victim's beliefs.
Now that's wasn't so hard, was it?

The political assassination of Charlie Kirk is a terrible harbinger for our democracy. Again, the response is antidemocratic.
No matter our background, origin, or party, most of us believe violence has no place in our politics. Yet, the MAGA regime fans flames of violence, trying to turn government into a weapon against us. We must make this a country where no one fears for our lives or our loved ones.
