1/ Iโ€™m Till Eckert, a ProPublica reporter. For the past 2 weeks, Iโ€™ve been going to the same NY immigration courthouse.

Nearly every time, I see ICE agents arresting immigrants. Today, a woman was slammed to the ground after begging officials not to take her husband away.

Why is it almost all decent news organizations, even the nonprofits, are so anti-union and so resistant to fairness?

@propublica.org, get it together. The organization isn't hurting for money. In 2023, you were sitting on $75 million in assets. #FairContractNow

He proposes releasing some ICE prisoners to labor on farms where the employers will โ€œown themโ€ and be responsible for them.

Historians have spent decades meticulously proving the straight line between slavery and modern capitalismโ€™s concept of the laborerโ€”or we could just let them say it.

Last week, Newark's mayor was arrested while visiting an ICE facility.

Trump is silencing those who hold him accountable.

At the same time, Congress is trying to pass a bill that increases ICE's capacity by $175 billion.

Thread from VA Secretary Doug Collinsโ€™ X account. The posts include the following: โ€œLast Friday, ProPublica sent us a host of questions and allegations regarding @DeptVetAffairs facilities around the country and set an unreasonable deadline of early Monday morning. Why the rush? Apparently, they wanted to publish their story before my Tuesday testimony in front of the Senate Committee on Veteransโ€™ Affairs. The story itself was a typical liberal-media hit piece thatโ€™s all too common nowadays. It seems as if the reporters decided what negative narrative they wanted to push, carefully cherry-picked their โ€œreportingโ€ to support that narrative, then ignored or minimized the facts we offered to defend VA. In this instance, ProPublica obtained some outdated reports from the internal system VA uses to quickly identify and fix issues across the department. ProPublica then used those reports to build a misleading case that our efforts to reform VA were causing massive problems.โ€

THREAD: Weโ€™ve reported that Veterans Affairs officials have warned that Trumpโ€™s cuts are hurting veterans.

VA Secretary Doug Collins called our story a โ€œfalse narrative,โ€ but did not say anything was inaccurate.

Hereโ€™s what our story revealed and how we engaged with the VA.

Gun shots or fireworks? Itโ€™s that time of year.

The pattern did not match fireworks, but the noise did not match guns.

Sirens; but that can go either way.

We did have a murder last month.

ProPublica management continues to deny steward representation
Yesterday morning, ProPublica management confirmed that it will deny steward representation to at least two more bargaining unit members it plans to discipline next week through the issuance of Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs).
This is part of a larger pattern: management has denied steward representation in every meeting where members were placed on PIPs. The plans are the first step in a disciplinary process that often leads to termination.
We have raised this issue repeatedly.
Last Thursday, more than 70% of our unit sent an open letter to ProPublica leadership, urging them to stop resisting core union protections including steward access, just cause and accountability in the disciplinary process.
This week, managers informed two employees that they would be placed on PIPs in meetings next week. Shortly afterward, ProPublicaโ€™s general counsel told Guild leadership that stewards will not be allowed in those meetings.
ProPublicaโ€™s disciplinary process remains opaque, inconsistently applied and shielded from scrutiny. Blocking stewards from these meetings is out of step with our industry and the principles of fairness and accountability the newsroom claims to uphold.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching.

Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

โ€œItโ€™s rude to discuss your salaryโ€

No it isnโ€™t. Thatโ€™s something companies made up so they could pay some of your less than others with no one getting mad. Discuss your salaries. Find the discrepancies. Demand more. The workers are in the same team.

Memory-Holing Jan. 6: What Happens When You Try to Make History Vanish? The Trump administrationโ€™s decision to delete a DOJ database of cases against Capitol riot defendants places those who seek to preserve the historical record in direct opposition to their ownโ€ฆ

NEW: The removal of the DOJโ€™s Jan. 6 database signals the Trump administrationโ€™s intention to not only spare his supporters any further consequences for their role in the riot, but to erase the event from the record.
