AI Search and the growing importance of developing strong core visibility systems, site-level quality scoring, and anti-spam systems Glenn Gabe explains the growing need for AI Search platforms to develop strong core ranking systems, site-level quality scoring, and anti-spam systems.

Here come the AI Search core systems. My latest post -> AI Search & the growing importance of developing strong core visibility systems, site-level quality scoring, & anti-spam systems

IMO, there is no way the AI Search platforms can let people game visibility while destroying user trust over time.

Shopify apps are spamming a website's backend now?

Is it just me or is that a red flag? The app's reviews are overwhelmingly positive, so it's a shame they feel the need to resort to this.

I blocked out the app's name to avoid advertising them.

If ever I use generative text for something and the results are along the lines of what I expected, I think "Do I like these results because they're what I expected?"

LLM usage makes critical thinking even more important IMO, yet in general it seems to reduce critical thinking.

I guess you saw and/or are referring to Tim Berners-Lee's article a few days ago?

It is very sad.

Something I don't get is how and why seemingly intelligent people like Geoffrey "Godfather of AI" Hinton peddle this crap. I instantly lose a lot of respect for such people.

My phone autocorrected to "Gooseberry of air" which is much more appropriate.

JPEG-XL has progressive display.

I've read it's better for colour reproduction than AVIF, and that's important given I'm a photographer and enjoy looking at photography. I think there were other photography-related reasons JPEG-XL beats AVIF.

JPEG-XL is an easy conversion from JPEG.
It's better than JPEG whereas webp sometimes is and sometimes isn't.
It wasn't created by Google (which in my experience seems to be the main reason webp was pushed).

I think it's more about a pure white background due to the glare it can cause? I find that more difficult to read so always use off-white for backgrounds.

I believe it makes it more difficult to read for some people with dyslexia too.

It's very annoying when websites hijack Ctrl+F, especially considering their own searches usually add to a poor user experience.

Lazy loading often breaks Ctrl+F too.

Competitors definitely aren't doing it if they rely on LLMs for SEO info.

Scientists can help governments plan for the future. But don’t forget sci-fi writers: we can do it too | Emma Newman Our job is to imagine scenarios from the impact of the climate crisis to the rise of AI – and decision-makers need our help, says Emma Newman

I see no harm in asking someone's opinion, especially in a place like NASA that has loads of great scientists.

While certain people take fiction too literally, sci-fi writers have value in this kind of thing IMO. I like this article from @emmanewman.bsky.social:

It's a shame but no surprise that comments are disabled for that article.

From sportswashing to gameswashing, Saudi Arabia is overtaking the world, and gaming doesn't have the protections that popular sport does.

Thanks Google for clarifying the incorrect time in two time formats.

I'd just listened to the Edwyn Collins song "Low Expectations."

The scale doesn't surprise me, but if scrapers were the reason, while I have reservations about all data, I didn't think Search Console data would be quite as bad as it was (and maybe still is).
