one of the big lessons im getting from jars really is just this. everything eventually does take care of itself, unless it is truly poisoned or everything gets killed off all at once by a severe ammonia spike from overfeeding

but is it really a "problem"? the animals inside certainly dont seem to mind something producing oxygen they can graze on. but to be honest.. i do like being able to look inside my little worlds

diatoms have bodies made of natural glass, and thus require the silica present in the play-sand i bought. I have noticed whenever I use this play sand instead of something more inert i always end up having a diatom problem

they grew. they eventually used up most of the silica present in the water. they were slowly grazed on. their remains became substrate. there are still many throughout the tank surely but not so much of an encompassing bloom

for a while one of my tanks had walls caked in hard orange diatoms hard to see through and hard to scrub off. i waited for a very long time. there are now no longer diatoms on the glass but there is a layer of orange detritus on the substrate now
