The Kremlin uses cognitive warfare to close the gaps between its goals and its means.

just realized that Ivan the terrible, Peter the Great, and (indirectly) Stalin all killed their own sons. in russia today these three are considered the country's greatest rulers. almost like a metaphor for russian history or something

The animated characters aren't real and that's the point.

AI can't go to the source to verify the information, let alone find new sources to gather new information.

How could we even tell if journalistic quality decreases?

AI can't report because reporting isn't writing or being on camera- it's doing the work in the real world to ascertain the facts. Telling people is the very last step.

And we don't have almost any people doing that work anymore.

AI chat bots cannot actually report the news. And I don’t say this on aesthetic grounds - I say this on “they do not exist in 3D space” grounds.

We will soon have no news whatsoever if this continues.

Too many people still either haven’t realized this, or don’t want to believe it, but it’s true.

Media has itself to blame for this. So much of their content is just regurgitating what someone else publishes, not actual journalism.

Data is everywhere you just have to know where to find it. Organizing it into information takes a tremendous amount of work. A lot of people use to getting information delivered to them and don't know anything about how it got there.

When the autocrat's court is sufficiently staffed with sociopaths competing for the autocrat's ever-fleeting favor, all it takes is the autocrat's show of displeasure for an eager lackey to commence the massacres. No orders needed, only the autocrat's tacit consent.

That is how genocides happen.

That is how authoritarian systems go from fearful obedience to favor-seeking fanaticism.

The elites who boosted the autocrat to power, thinking they could control the autocrat, lose their influence because they can't compete with the zealots. The autocrat's court belongs to the fanatic lackeys.

That is one reason why authoritarian systems tend to attract, reward, and promote socipathic and psychopathic tendencies. They often incentivize decisive high-stakes risk-taking behaviour in those seeking the autocrat's favor.

And so the autocrat's court becomes more and more extremist over time.

When there are many sycophants competing for the autocrats favor, it often pays to be proactive and decisive.

There's of course always the risk of displeasing the autocrat, but in such circumstances those with less risk-aversion, such as psychopaths, are more likely to gamble and win.

In the end, the autocrat may never have to order people they dislike to be removed from their post, to be disappeared, or to be killed.

Their sycophants will do it for them without being told to, in anticipation that it may please the autocrat.

When there's intense competition for the autocrat's favor, those attempting to stand out tend to resort to more and more extreme displays of obedience and loyalty.

Such as purging anything and anyone the autocrat might dislike, even before the autocrat even voices their dislike.

Vying for power (or survival) in an authoritarian system means pleasing the autocrat. And when everyone obeys in advance, anticipating what the autocrat may soon demand, those seeking favor must also please in advance, anticipating what the autocrat desires.
