Found out this morning that this is not considered a bug by Typescript team :

This is a valid subtype reduction since strings are "object-like".

This is pseudo code to recreate the typing issue. I have no problem with undefined returning function, I don’t want to change any behavior, only for TS to infer types properly.

Couple things to note :
- I am using 0 type annotations here, this is all inferred types
- This is not a precision loss, as it would default to `any`
- This is a broken type as it wrongly changes the type to `{}`

This is especially hard to find info on this issue as people usually have the opposite problem of lost types when cloning an object with spread operator...
