Tugging further on this fascinating historical thread...

This painting shows Sir Harry Harper with a favourite horse, Furiband, and an unnamed groom, c. 1774: could this be a portrait of "Jockey Jack"? I certainly hope so! #18c

Rudy & Blacksky are doing something unprecedented. A digital communal space built, maintained, and supported by the community itself. Places like these are special and don't come often.

If you're someone who identifies as an ally, a great way to show support would be donating to keep the lights on.

been thinking about wondery this week and the first time I visited their offices in weho, almost exactly 9 years ago (august of 2016). they were still brand new and reached out because I was also in weho and they were getting into the fiction game with secrets, lies, and videotapes.

For the Worldcon autonomous car panel, got any SFF stories focused on auto-driving cars? I’ve got @sarahgailey.bsky.social’s STET and @megelison.bsky.social’s Autonomy but would love other recs.

I went to see Crazy Rich Asians in theaters and when dude proposed and opened the box to reveal his mother's ring, the whole theater gasped. I remember it as a lesson in storytelling. It wasn't just a ring, the audience immediately understood what it meant to the story and that was by design.

Fantastic news for artists: The lost functionality of Google Image Search as a reference image source has been recreated.

Yeah, I mean I learned what 'conceited' meant from Beauty and the Beast. I had to ask my parents. And I started reading adult sci-fi when I was 10. My vocabulary was huge and weird.

I write kids content and I've had so many arguments with people about big words in kids stuff. Even if there's a definition right after it. Kids are smarter than people give them credit for and are capable of learning from context clues.

A warning from history here. Jokes that go over your head are so necessary for kids. Pee-Wee to The Simpsons to MST3K make you *curious*. When you're spoon-feeding people "at their level", something they already know and like, you're intentionally just training consumers. And that's all AI will do.

I don't think my major (anthropology) specifically counts as STEM, though the argument can be made, but we had a lot of ethics coursework to go along with our studies and I think the emphasis on ethics is something some STEM courses are lacking. Especially in the comp sci realm.

Humans don't act according to logical patterns so the solutions that come out are authoritarian and borderline psychotic. Humanities gives context to the sciences. While I'm not into forcing everyone to take a humanities course, if we're relying on STEM for all our decisions then yes they should.

02.08.2025 14:17 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I don't think it's about STEM turning people evil, but about STEM solutions being implemented without context. STEM is being touted as the solution to everything and therefore putting pressure on engineers, for example, to solve human problems like poverty.

Now down to less than $1000 to be fully funded! You could be the one to take them over the top (and receive extremely fine SF/F stories and features in the bargain)!

Hard same. I used to play online games with a male pseudonym because of the way male gamers treated women. They didn't "see" women in games online because we were hiding from them and the way they acted.

the world, which seems tragically harsh and even doomed on a two coffees empty stomach, now seems alive with possibility after 900 calories of lunch. No conclusions to draw from that

I have a secret cat chat (encrypted of course) where me and about 25 people I only vaguely know exchange pictures of our cats and do things like rate stretches, acknowledge Double Dangles and other athletic feats, and of course, attempt to divine where all the legs are:
