...I hope that's not why you think Anthony Albanese is PM?
Compulsory voting has benefits - elections are scheduled for when people can attend, voting places are easy to get to, and a serious effort is made to make sure everyone can vote. It means our politics is more boring, which I like.

Agree that design that supports story is key. As a LARPer I'm preferring rules-light, but I still want some kind of RNG factor. I also like a way for PCs to push their luck when it matters.
My play groups are more interested in story, so mechanics need to be the minimum to support the game.

I'm not 100% on board, but I like a lot of the points Kieron makes here, that it's not the crunchiness of mechanics or the novelty of the setting - but how the mechanics support the story that makes a game really stand out.

I was part of a game that used One Quiet Year as a shared world-building exercise. I've gone on to use a variant to build out my Spelljammer world - I highly recommend spending that time with players at the start of a campaign. Draw out what they want - and get a bunch of free ideas!

I think lifting people out of poverty is a policy choice. That's all it is and the government could make that choice." -

Photo of a coffin shaped bookcase in an entryway. Each of its five shelves are full of spooky books, with large format books for little kids at the bottom, building books for late teens at the top.

On top of the bookcase is a black candelabra holding three white candles, and to the right of the bookcase is a skeleton sculpture.

It's explainers, op-eds, fact checks, pre-bunking, research and the blog, with plans for news features and investigative journalism as it grows. So it's not news, news, but what's going on behind and around the news, issues based, and what matters. And it's free. Hope to see you there x

This is brilliant writing by Amy Remeikis (one of Australia's best journalists, in my opinion). I tried to pick out a quote to lead into this piece - but every word is excellent - so you'll just have to read it all for yourself. She nails it.

Leo questioned a world where the wealth of the elite grows
"exponentially" while many "millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings." He also criticized "ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation,"
with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naΓ―ve."

Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

"Do you worry about safety? Something that we talk about a lot is legal or other threats from the White House. You have a president who sued CBS, which settled. Colbert was canceled under what I would describe as suspect circumstances, to say the least. The administration is looking for media companies to fall in line. Satire is not immune from that threat. How do you think about The Onion’s safety in this moment, whether legal or otherwise?

Well, they're going to come after you eventually if they don't come after you right away. The more you stand up and really puff your chest out, generally the better off you are. This is true of all fascist regimes throughout history: They hate ridicule and they hate people who are unbothered. And to say that you're not scared is insane. Everyone's a little afraid. And that's fine. You're supposed to be. They're trying to make you afraid all day long.

I have 40-plus years left on this planet Earth. I don't want to live like that. I don't think any of us do. I think it's more about how do you want to wake up every day and tell your kids what you did in this time period.

I never thought it was an option to just be like, β€œAll right, cool. I guess we'll just be worse at comedy now.” What the fuck are you talking about? That's not what we're going to do. We're going to stand up for what we believe and what we know is true, and we're going to do exactly what we did before. And I'm telling you right now, when you do that, people might give you a hundred bucks to get your newspaper, because they want that in their house. They want to tell their friends in private that actually, I'm not OK with this."
