how to make a big-ass protest banner
@mousefists 2025

YOU WILL NEED
-weed barrier fabric (black tear resistant, & cheap!)
-white duct tape
-quilting ruler (or a 24x6in piece of cardboard)
this may seem unnecessary but it's really important for readability from a distance!
-white chalk/crayon/pencil
-scissors
-pen & paper

OPTIONAL
 -kneeling pad/pillow
-grommers & mallet
-weights for corners (if you're working outside)
---
i recommend reading all of the instructions and gathering all your materials before starting
---
this is something doable in an afternoon.

PREP

1. layout your weed barrier fabric onto a hard surface-- wood / linoleum / concrete flooring is ideal (not carpet if avoidable) i recommend aiming for around 15ft. *DON'T CUT YET*

2. use your quilting ruler / 24x6in cardboard piece to add parallel lines to the top & bottom 6in. away from the edge. and to the end of the fabric (opposite) the roll). this is to aid in lining up text.

3. add a horizontal line across the middle using the ruler to mark 24in. up from the bottom creating dash marks and a vertical like down the center by folding it in half & marking at the fold point.

[drawing of the banner still on it's roll with white lines in the aforementioned places] should look kinda like this.

LETTERS

4. write down your message on a piece of paper. check spelling, decide how many lines, & find the mid point.

5. lightly sketch out your message onto the fabric using your chalk. start at the cut edge and go towards the roll.

(if you make a mistake or your spacing is off you can just sketch it over again. it won't be visible once the letter are taped on. you can also use the reverse side of the fabric.)

[drawing of the banner on the roll with a message sketched out that reads "NO BORDERS, NO BANS // ON THESE STOLEN LANDS!"

6. now you can grab your scissors and cut it off of the roll. make sure to leave at least a 6in. gap at the end.

7. tear strips of white duct tape to shape out letter. use shorter strips for curves line in "O" & "B" and longer pieces for letters like "T" & "A"

FINISHING UP

8. let the duct tape adhere to the fabric for 24hrs. for best results.

in the meantime, feel free to do these steps if needed:

9. cut wind vents. this makes it much easier to hold in windy conditions. cut several 5in. vertical slits between the letters. if it will be in use for a long time, you ncan reinforce with black duct tape.

10. add grommets. you only need to add grommets if you're hanging the banner somewhere. (or you can reinforce the corners & feed zip-ties through cut holes.)

ok! that's it. take care of each other!

Do Not Comply In Advance: bossy, already a cliche, implies permission to comply later

Fuck You, Make Me: leads by example, directs yelling at opposition instead of allies, easy to chant at a protest or put on a banner

This Christmas, it's okay if:
You skip the decorations.
You don't enjoy the fuss.
Takeaway beats turkey for you.
You're grieving a loved one.
Your metal health isn't great.
Expensive gifts aren't an option.
You need space for yourself.
You're feeling unwell.
You just want to do things your way.
You spend the day in pjs.
You chose rest over traditions.
