NRC Reauthorizes Palisades Operating License in Historic First for U.S. Nuclear Industry In a major milestone for the U.S. nuclear industry, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has formally approved Holtec’s request to transition the Palisades Nuclear Plant from decommissioning status back to an operating license. 

Once operational, Palisades will provide 800+ MW of carbon-free baseload power—“enough to power more than 800,000 households.”

This milestone allows the plant to receive new fuel and move reactor operators into active roles, advancing progress toward its historic restart.

The NRC has approved Holtec’s request to transition Palisades Nuclear Plant from decommissioning status back to an operating license—a first for a U.S. nuclear plant.

NextEra seeks to reconnect Duane Arnold to the grid NextEra Energy has filed a request with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission seeking to reclaim interconnection rights that were previously transferred from the shut down Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa to a solar energy project.  ;

If successful, it would be joining the nuclear restart efforts at Palisades in Michigan and Three Mile Island/Crane Clean Energy Centre in Pennsylvania.

Originally Iowa’s only nuclear plant, Duane Arnold once supplied nearly 20% of the state’s emission-free electricity. Now, amid surging demand for reliable, low-carbon power, NextEra says recommissioning the plant is the fastest path forward.

NextEra Energy has files a request to reclaim interconnection rights at the former Duane Arnold nuclear plant site—scrapping a solar project there in favor of restarting the 615 MWe reactor, which was shut down in 2020.

UK Inks Investment Deals on £38 Billion Sizewell C Nuclear Plant The UK announced final approval for the Sizewell C nuclear power plant after securing private investment in the £38 billion ($51 billion) project that will help advance the government’s energy and climate goals.

Once completed, Sizewell C is expected to provide electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, with minimal impact on consumers (around £1 per month during construction).

EU opens door to funding nuclear energy in next budget The European Commission wants to open up part of its proposed 2 trillion euro EU budget for 2028-2034 to nuclear energy, a move likely to divide the bloc's member states, which Germany immediately rejected.

Nevertheless, this marks an important step in the broader adoption of nuclear energy as opinions and priorities adapt to climate change, energy needs, and geopolitical instability.
