How do you get to zero pedestrian traffic deaths?

1. Lower speeds
2. Improved pedestrian and biking infrastructure
3. Increased public transit options
4. Better enforcement

Any city could do this. They used a data driven approach. Most cities know where their problem areas are.

Do we have any data on the number of tickets, fines or points issued to drivers who don't obey those No Turn on Red signs? Or MCPD plans to enforce those new signs?

We need more bike libraries that include all types of bikes for all ages and abilities.

One of the most unheralded parts of making streets safer for children is the amount of time it frees up for parents.

If younger people can't afford to live in your county, your county doesn't have a future - no matter how much the older, more affluent homeowners might hate the idea of change.

Did you know transit is 20 times safer than driving a car? Each year, public transportation prevents more than 2,500 injuries related to car accidents.Β Take Metro!

Every summer, we flew 12-14 hours from the US to see my mother's family. Her parents were elderly & frail; this was the only time of year she'd see them. Why go thru torture of taking THREE kids, all LESS THAN 4 years old, on a 12 hour int'l flight, only to stay 1-2 weeks?

Congrats @ggwash.org on winning an APTA Local Coalition Grant! DC TEN will roll out the narrative-setting strategy around the "transportation time tax," a messaging campaign that will give language to the experience of transit trips taking longer than car trips

Was back there the other day, and saw that there are actually 2 signs. There's a "NO TURN ON RED" sign in addition to the "YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS" sign. And, when the pedestrians have the walk signal, the folks in that car lane have a red light.
Would a "WE MEAN IT" sign be the next step?

THIS is spiritual leadership.

I would like statements from Jewish leaders wrt Jews & non-Jewish employees of Jewish orgs at risk of ICE w/similar thoughtfulness.

I would also like to see clear language stating that all Jewish spaces are regarded as sanctuary from ICE now.

Never again is now.

We simply cannot allow the world's most powerful antisemites to continue pretending they care about the safety or freedom of American Jews. They don't give a fuck about us, and no one should act like they do.

The last time I had a near-crash as a pedestrian in Silver Spring: the pedestrian walk light was on. In fact, it had just switched on, the start of a rel. long cycle.

The driver that nearly hit me was turning right, in lane governed by a sign reading "right turn yield to pedestrians".

Fun times.

Love it.

If you're lucky enough to have someone who makes it from scratch, it's entirely different from the canned / jarred version in the grocery store.

I'm not that person, and I'll take the grocery store version as it is, sometimes with a lot of horseradish.

Anecdotally, adult status seems to affect a finding of fault for both non-motorists and drivers.

-Non-adult non-motorist, adult driver? Non-adult found at fault
-Adult non-motorist, non-adult driver? Non-adult found at fault.

Climate Change Demands More Air Conditioning An often-disparaged technology is a lifesaver, not a luxury.

Air conditioning is an absolutely vital life-saving technology on a swiftly-warming planet, and people who claim it's somehow more shameful to cool a home than it is to heat one are idiots.

I wrote this a few years ago and still stand by it:

Explainer: What the "80-20 Highway-Transit Split" Really Is, and What it Isn't - The Eno Center for Transportation July 26, 2021 - There has been a lot of talk in the last week about the "80-20 highway-transit split," and not all of it was accurate. Herewith: a brief explainer.

Your June 20 reminder that by tradition, not law, federal transportation spending is split 80-20: 20 cents on transit for every 80 cents spent on highways.

Along with your June 20 reminder that the actual spend on transit is less than 20%.

Black Cycling Clubs: 'We Just Want a Safe Place to Park Our Bikes' - Streetsblog New York City Leaving a bike on the sidewalk overnight or while at work often results in a missing tire or gearset, but for most of us, it’s only a matter of time until the entire frame disappears.

This is simply one of the most thoughtful and nuanced explanations of the role that cycling infrastructure plays in Black and Brown communities. Definitely worth a read.

When I started Oonee I was shocked to see so many pols treat πŸ”’πŸš² as 2nd tier issue. That was not my experience growing up in BK.
