Lowkey implication is that police need to speed through here to pursue criminals, which seems like a bad idea in a dense neighborhood.

Public safety means protecting people from traffic violence, too.

I love Free Range Kids and am a big fan of the founder (co-author of this piece) but she has a real blind spot when it comes to the role cars have played in limiting kids ability to roam and play IMO

Here's the latest on the City's attempt to remove diverters in northwest Portland This is a test of how Portland's new government makes decisions.

So far, I havenโ€™t heard satisfactory answers to my questions and I remain very concerned not just about the impacts of removing these diverters, but about the precedent we would set by doing so.

I hear you and itโ€™s a horrible situation. Itโ€™s just hard, generally, to have sympathy for parents who opt out of public schools. As a parent of 2 PPS kids, we navigate differences constantly and, I would argue, more meaningfully b/c no one is turned away.

Torontoโ€™s speed cameras have reduced speeding, aggressive driving by almost half: new SickKids report Study looks at 250 different locations across Toronto from July 2020 and December 2022.

Automated enforcement is a critical tool in our road safety arsenal. It's far more effective and about a billion times less costly than policing:

We simply cannot afford a doom loop for TriMet. Reduction in service will lead to a reduction in ridership, leading to declining fares, more cuts, ๐Ÿ” The cost will be increased congestion, further deterioration in PBOT assets and of course emissions. We canโ€™t afford that. Call your state reps.

Portland Community College cuts programs to fight budget deficit The program reductions stem from increasing costs, insufficient state funding and declining enrollment.

Since 2019, enrollment has declined by 19% but management FTE has increased 29%

Last year, 43% of new hires at PCC were managers, administrators, or confidential employees.

Cutting programs = fewer students/less revenue.

This headline should be "PCC has a spending problem"

The Teens Are Taking Waymos Now Alphabetโ€™s self-driving car company launches what it hopes will be lucrative individual teen accountsโ€”and maybe a whole lot of social change in the process.

I'm sorry but this whole thing makes me feel insane. Let's just be real: we stole basic independence from generations of kids and teenagers by intentionally making our cities deadly + impossible to travel outside a car, and now corporations are selling a worse version of it back to them at a price.

Itโ€™s a terrible bill. It will literally kill people. The most vulnerable among us will suffer as the wealthiest benefit. Itโ€™s perverse. I wish there were something I could do. But alas, I am only a U.S. Senator from Alaska whose โ€œnoโ€ vote would kill the bill. So I voted yes. You get it.

Oregon House Rep & Joint Committee on Transportation Vice-Chair Shelly Boshart Davis is using false data in her final statement on the transportation bill.

It's another example of how folks who opposed HB 2025 intentionally misled voters w falsehoods to foment anger and opposition....

I don't think the average American understands how many folks pay for nursing home care through Medicaid. It's not just poor people. This is oversimplifying but, the way our system is set up is that you sell everything you own to pay for it, then you apply for medicaid to pay for the rest.
