AI is now capable of designing a record-breaking deep sea submersible on its own. This marks a new age of exploration and I encourage all my fellow AI champions to build one and get in it so they can celebrate this achievement from the bottom of the sea.

Hegseth’s Headlong Pursuit of Academic Mediocrity His military-education reforms seem designed to ensure fighting men can’t think and thinking men can’t fight.

“Secretary of the Navy John Phelan…has directed [the] purge of 60 civilian professors from the U.S. Naval Academy.…The humanities, he ordered, should be particularly targeted.”

Gutted. As a former USNA prof, I know I made a positive difference in my mids’ lives.

Amazing that people can say that stealing the entirety of someone's writing / music / art to feed to AI constitutes "fair use" with a straight face TBH.

Single frame. Left to right: Skip containing statue, paintings, books visible on left. Man in white coat at top of ladder feeding book into open mouth of a huge robotic dog with studded collar and dog-tag “AI”. Red bucket on floor below dog’s lowered rear. Second white-coated man says to onlooking woman: “It’s marvellous really. You just feed in all the intellectual property you can get your hands on without paying for it, then sell whatever comes out this end…”

Attacks on the humanities at Australian universities are not new – but they are now more lethal | Julianne Schultz Punishing fees for arts degrees must be ended if the country seriously wants to take part in the information age and give students the opportunities we need them to have

"Attacks on the humanities are ... now more lethal as the routines of corporate logic have been instrumentalised by university managements keen to squeeze the last penny out of challenged operational budgets, while capital budgets continue to be deployed to rebuild campuses as five-star resorts"

The disastrous dismantling of the humanities in Australia’s universities has begun A crisis is unfolding for the humanities and social sciences at universities across the country.

Opinion | Labor was scathing of the Morrison government's "Job-ready Graduates" scheme when it was in opposition. So why hasn't it rolled the changes back?

Helping each other out is not charity, that is being a pro-social human who cares. Charity via the large organisations that dispense aid (inevitably with a range of strings attached) is the problem. Eg: Food should never have to be begged for from charity. It should be a right every human has.

ANU feminists slam cuts for 'destroying' gender studies program ANU leadership likened to Donald Trump's chainsaw cutting of public service.

Devastated to hear about cuts to gender studies at the ANU. I was the inaugural ANU Gender Institute PhD Scholar and it was in gender studies that I realised my love of teaching. The ANU receives special federal funding, there is no need for these cuts!

Gutting humanities and social sciences means, “The erosion of intellectual diversity, the neglect of vulnerable students who find their voices and futures within these fields, and the abandonment of the university’s commitment to a more just and inclusive society.”

Historians in the classroom on a daily basis try to dismantle myths about bias — students tend to think that only "bias-free" sources are good sources. (All sources have bias, EVERYTHING has a bias).
