Five years ago today.

As the baseball world mourned the passing of Hank Aaron, a surprise arrived in my mailbox.

My Don Sutton rookie — thought to be lost after his passing days earlier — returned, signed.

It was postmarked January 18, the day he passed. The heaviest card in my collection.

Will this be published somewhere? I have Schmidt’s contact info, would love to get to him (or put you in touch to talk more Dr Buonomo)

I took this photo to a Schmidt signing. He PLOWED through the 100 people ahead of me—moved sooo fast. When I put this in front of him, everything stopped. He lit up talking about his time there, mentioning Dr. Buonomo often. Cool to see what it meant to him. Glad I brought a pic for him to keep!

Maggie recognized what was happening and ran to get Ellie. In doing so, she knowingly missed her own chance to meet / get a photo with Ledecky.

She somehow got through security to bring them together.

Ellie got this moment only because of Maggie. Maggie is a fucking badass.

Ellie was lined up for her event when Ledecky appeared. Katie sat quickly with Ellie’s team for a picture while Ellie was swimming. Ellie had no idea Katie was there and that she was missing the photo op (kind of shitty how it happened)…

The best part - and I’ve cried all day recalling it. That girl in the middle is Ellie’s biggest rival in summer swim. They are the same age / swim same events / on rival teams.

Maggie has won 3 NBSL championships with Ellie coming in 2nd. Ellie has won 3 with Maggie in 2nd - they battle.

Fast forward to this weekend.. Ellie is swimming 9 events in the Katie Ledecky Invitational.

Today, Katie Ledecky is poolside as Ellie won her backstroke heat.

Got a post-race high five from Ledecky.

Worked perfect until Ellie found out… FURIOUS that she missed it. WHY DID RYAN GET TO MEET HER - THATS MY IDOL!?!?!

I can’t fix it. How the hell do I get Ellie to meet her? Ledecky is still training - she doesn’t do the meet and greet shit.

Last year Katie Ledecky appeared at our local Dick’s. We kept it a secret from Ellie because a swim meet had her out of state.

I had to stay back with my son for baseball. We got in line at 3am to guarantee we could get her autograph for Ellie…
