Gaza: The Reckoning The debate on whether Israelโ€™s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide is now closed, and has been closed for a while.

"A functioning police state needs no police". I know its creepy old William Burroughs, but I always thought it was a good observation - especially with the implication that there is only need to police in the presence of resistance

Barm cake - Wikipedia

I'd always thought it was "Barm Cakes" - for me, one of the funniest things about that movie is the observation of the way English people speak English.

You know a country by its values. By what a country values. And it turns out thatwhat a country values can change overtime. Sometimes, though, there's a sort of cognitive delay between the country you think you are in, and the country you've actually become. For example, you can keep selling yourself, to foreigners, as the country of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and luring busloads of tourists to Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, and put a statue of George Orwell in front of the BBC, and imagine yourself a cultured and literate nation, which the rest of the world admires for its devotion to the written word - but if you then chronically underfund your cultural institutions, and treat your cultural workers with contempt, many people will suspect you of being full of it. And as the decades pass - and fewer and fewer Shakespeares and Austens and Orwells emerge from your little island - even more people will begin to suspect that in truth you do not value culture at all, and are in fact running a giant heritage museum in which the only cultural workers you respect are the dead ones.

BBC "Is it the same anti-establishment populist message that propelled Trump to victory - only in the left's image".
WTF? Giving people childcare, housing and transport is EXACTLY the same as drenching neighbourhoods in teargas, lifting people off the streets, and concentration camps. No difference

Iโ€™m totally baffled by how so many English politicians can be seemingly in-awe of a mythical halcyon past that didnโ€™t happen, while simultaneously apparently unaware of historical events that certainly did happen like English Football clubs being banned from Europe, Enoch Powell, or The Cold War.

On Parenthood and Genocide A new mother and scholar of forced displacement writes about Israel's mass murder of Palestinian children in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, Gazaโ€™s children & families have proven to be the most vulnerable.

In this 2024 piece, sociologist and new mother @hebagowayed.bsky.social wrote about the unbearable loss of Palestinian childrenโ€”and the power of parental love as resistance.

Politicians want to normalise whatโ€™s happening in Gaza. Our moral outrage wonโ€™t let that happen | Nesrine Malik The more shocking the carnage becomes, the more people are punished for speaking out. This just makes it clear how much is really at stake, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

โ€˜The demand is that to be safe from persecution, you must pluck out your eyes. Instead of ejecting Gaza from domestic politics, Israelโ€™s allies have brought the war home.โ€™
